It's taken too seriously because of the ultimate goal (unless you're rambling) of the criticism. It's like everyone is trying to form a "better" world of music. Because music taste is completely different for everyone, the criticism is only "bettering" the person that is criticizing. And frankly, that's pretty annoying if my music taste doesn't run along the same ground. I can't speak for anyone else, but feeling offended has nothing to do with my challenge of your criticism.

This is why I agree with the whole "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" deal. Listen to what you like and be happy. If someone is playing music that you don't like... don't listen to it. Why waste your time writing about how someone is doing something wrong just because you don't agree with it? Go listen/mix/create your own music that you enjoy.

one of the principle goals of art is to incite a reaction be it positive or negative.

This is crap.

Criticism can lead to reevaluation of your tastes and exploration of music beyond what you listen to habitually. It can cause you to hear your same old favorite songs with a new perspective. It certainly has done this for me. Even if it's a person totally trashing something I like, I can at least attempt to see things from their point of view and look at my own listening choices from an outside perspective, which is often enlightening or at least interesting.

For those reasons, I think criticism is great.

But I think a lot of people do have a certain "don't rain on my parade" mentality, where they don't want to hear anything negative said about their favorite music. And I think at least part of this is a fear that they'll come to believe the critic is right, and that they'll start to see their former "favorites" as trite or boring or just uninspired, and they'll have to seek out new music to get back those wonderful feelings that those old favorites used to inspire.

I can agree, however, that there is such a thing as unhelpful criticism -- mindless stuff like "it sucks," or attacks on the personalities of the listener base, or stupid sayings like "you'll grow out of it" -- there's actually a whole lot of that on TA really. But there's also real, substantive criticism that can help people grow as music listeners and gain new perspectives, IMO.

I just get REALLY pissy when EVERYONE who criticizes either assumes the other person is doing the "rain on their parade" mentality when they're not, or they say something like "it sucks". For this, I stated my point.
