People know people who know people who have met people who know people. I don't see how it's weird. When people join they either a) introduced themselves, b) someone already knows them either by IM or in person so they call them by their first name or c) they at some point mention their name while on the forum. So tell me, if we know someones name why would we continue calling them by their TA name?
And, knowing it's someones birthday and NOT saying happy birthday is rude.
