I was reading a post over at GS yesterday where they were talking about the new Waldorf 8 voice hybrid thingy, and the guy couldn't understand why it was so expensive if it wasn't analogue. There's a blind, almost fanatical worship of what is actually pretty simple, old fashioned technology.

Why WOULDN'T modern DSP with touchscreens and a complex OS be more expensive?

But anyway, it's not hard to enjoy both now is it!

There's various levels of analog along the signal chain.

Analog synths, analog summing / mixing or even analog processing..

In my opinion, there are definitely some sonic benefits from analog summing - exporting individual ITB tracks and/or groups out to tube/value circuitry that imparts 'imperfections' to them i.e. warmth

This can be interpreted as rounder transients, smoother hi-end and a marginally better stereo representation.

However, analog-modeled plugins can sound extremely close to real analog esp. the UAD stuff.

So, whether the (subjective) sonic benefits of real analog over analog-modeled plugins, justify their price-tag is another issue altogether.
