Well that's a safe introductory technique which will get you a basic impression of the customer, sales isn't about product, your business or yourself, its about customers.
If they are genuinely interested, push the sale as far as you can, if they're just browsing, don't waste your time and if they're just going to be flying through there isn't much point in pressing the matter either. There's a whole lot more too it at a psychological level in terms of reading body language, mood and general interest, worst comes to worst you can flatter and seduce them to some extent
