Obsession is a regular trance party that has been going strong for quite some time, and when one of the world's biggest is set to play there...you know it's going to be a big night!
I arrived at about 12pm to the sounds of Steve Strangis and Scott Bateman. Going back to back they played off each other really well, and the crowd with their hands in the air, were really enjoying it. The dancefloor was pretty full already, but there was still room to dance. While it was still relatively early in the night, the sounds were coming thick and fast. Speaking of the sound, it was really awesome, big bass, quality highs that didn't hurt your ears.
It's easy to see why Obsession has been going for so long, with quality local DJs such as these two, and JulesPLees who played earlier on, really making it hard for the internationals! To describe the sound that Steve and Scott where pushing, I would say that it was a deeper type of trance, more a progressive style than hard house, yet still really banging! Sorry I can't id any of them though.
Not long after, I arrived the side room opened, and Paulie_C and Lister Cooray were on. With the Interview crew putting on the side room this was an added bonus of the night. While at a slower pace than the main room, the tunes were quality none the less. One id I can give you was Dousk by Pa Dida, played by Lister, although I can't take credit for it, it was
given to me by Paulie!
At 1:30am it was time for Lawrence to hit the decks. While not necessarily picking up the pace, he certainly lifted the bar. With someone of his experience and popularity, you would expect nothing less. Lawrence's set progress at a fast pace, laying down track after track that had the crowd dancing their feet off and keeping their hands in the air. Again playing a deeper but fast trance sound his set was full of big beats and some massive break downs.
Playing after Lawrence were, Charlee Zee and Papa Smurf. Pushing the sounds out even faster, they really impressed and kept the crowd on the dancefloor.
Back in the side room, Ben Evans had picked up the pace a bit with a slightly more melodic progressive sound. A sound out track for me is the gorgeous Shiloh - Hi and Lo. Considering the time the side room was quite full, with people mostly chilling out and enjoying the tunes being played.
I would like to mention the crowd now. Not an old crowd as such, but a slightly more mature crowd, it was really friendly and there were heaps of smiles around. It was a really relaxed atmosphere too, which was really refreshing too.
At this point it was time to leave for me. I can say though, if you are after some fun, and want to hear some quality trance, I suggest that you head to the next Obsession. International or not, guaranteed you will have a great time!
