Jake nobody is going to read that. They're going to read the first post, and then reply with a rant of disgust at why xxx is in spot xx and why dj yyy should have been in spot yy and who the fuck is dj zzz anyway?

And some people will say "if zyfq dj isnt in the top 10 I will shoot myself in the arm" but they really wont.

Armin does use Ableton for ASOT, but I can't say i've seen him using it for clubs shows and massives etc.

BTW, I believe Armin does his show, which is where he gets the most exposure, on Ableton.

I think it's fine to do a radio show or a mix cd in Ableton, but if you are DJing in a club, then I think you should mix the records (or CDs) live.

Bands record albums in the studio, then play live shows on tour, it's pretty much the same for DJs.

As for signing waivers, the DJs who have something to hide have complete stage blocks, meaning no one but their managers get up there.

I know. I figure at best that I'll get one or two responses. It didn't hurt to try and ask, though.

Why is mixing in Ableton not live?

Why do you guys care? If you like your favorite DJ, why does it matter to you where he places in the eyes of people other than yourself? How is that a "travesty?" Why can't you just listen to their sets and productions and be happy with the fact that you enjoy them?

I'm not trying to be an "elitist" here, I'm not trying to be an asshole, I wont bash you for answering with your own opinion, I'm just generally curious.

All my choices fell. I must not be as cool this year as last

I think the major reason people get their panties in a bunch is because of the effect it has on bookings. When club promoters use this list to determine if it's financially viable to bring DJ xx to a club, it kind of sucks that good DJs are passed over because they're not ranking high enough.

Either that or lower rankings result in booking fees, and subsequently ticket prices dropping. This results in bookings in smaller clubs, filled with music lovers only because the masses only coming to see a name stay away.

Truth is, I have seen it first hand. Very well known DJs playing one continuous audio file out of Ableton. There is no live mixing, just a lot of theatrics pretending and occasionally changing the levels.

Ableton can be used to mix live and that's great.

But there are some DJs who pretend to mix live using Ableton when all they are really doing is playing one continous audio file. It's the same as playing a CD. To me that is pure laziness.

Problem is, how can you tell who is mixing live using Ableton, and who is not?

And at the end of the day does it really matter anyway as long as people have a good time?

For me, I guess it does matter because I still like to see some art in mixing, whether it be live mixing through the desk, or using Ableton.

What makes that any different than a guy pretending to play a whole set while a CD plays by itself?

People who fake sets are full of shit, people who dont should not be constrained to a certain medium because of them.

If you're smart you can tell the difference and thats all there is too it.

Reminds me of good 'ol Keoki haha

anyway. I have a problem with those that play continuous audio files...but people like Sasha and Diggers actually use ableton and make their mixes interesting....using their own controler and mixing different elements of tracks. People can just pre-warp marker their tracks, and throw them in live....which will automatically sync tracks up. I've made mixes in live...its not that hard to make a mix...its another story to use live and make it interesting, and use the program to its full porential....big difference. Oh and I could care less about armin doing ASOT in ableton...

do you really think that 99% of the retail cd's that dj's put out are "live" mixes? Hell no...i'd bet that most are Ableton.

Agreed. There is no difference between a DJ that plays a continuous audio file and a DJ who plays a CD while pretending to DJ live. It's a big con either way.

I also agree that it's a shame that a medium like Ableton comes into question because some lazy DJs use it to fake live sets.

Unfortunately not everyone can tell the difference.
