lol those desks are always covered with a vinyl top. its particle board underneath the vinyl. the vinyl can be easily removed though if you just get a scraper from home depot. then use a screw driver to separate the edges.

My dad has a desk similar to this down in his office. They're really durable and have a lot of space but they weigh a TON. It took a monumental amount of time and effort getting it down there. If you go for it just be aware it's quite heavy.
