Time to bump this bad boy for the Sony press conference that happened today...unveiling a pretty huge item.

PS3 Slim

Not exactly a surprise - there had been rumors as far back as a year ago that Sony was unleashing a 'slimmed' version of the PS3 - but it was a welcome announcement nonetheless.

The best part = $299.99. Not only does it sport a reduced price, but a hefty 120GB HD to boot.

Still, no PS2 backwards-compatibility, but I think the general public is used to that since BC had gone the way of the dino a couple years back, anyway.

This site right here:

http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ps3-s...boxing/2217809/

...is pretty sweet. Go through all the photos...the PS3 slim is compared to almost every console ever made..even the Jaguar and Sega CD. Pretty awesome.

Read more about the Slim announcement here...

The release date for this is 'sometime during the first week of September.' I'm sure Sony will start shipping these gradually, while phasing out the older, bigger models.

wouldn't the slim models perform worse than the others because of all the heat?

Does anyone think PCs are better than consoles like the PD3? Cheaper over time, much more upgradeable, and more versatile. What do you think?

My PS3 has always been very cool. In fact, I would go as far to say that it would be an effective A/C unit to a hamster/gerbil house.

unlike a certain system.

But I'm sure with the cost and manufacturing restructuring, heat dissipation has been addressed.

hahahhaha, that's fucked.

i dont mean that the PS3 has a heat problem or anything. just that smaller cases tend to run hotter and why would you want slim other than for the looks?

You need to download the new expansion, Wipeout HD Fury...lots of new cars and tracks. It's badass.

Your mentioning of a heat problem might be addressed by this little tidbit: (I honestly don't know, my lack of knowledge in just about all things hardware doesn't really help me in answering your question)

quote:
The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the "old" PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim has also been cut to two-thirds

I guess to answer your question, a slim lined version of the console would permit for more power efficiency and reduced fan noise. But really, it is more so for the looks, like you mentioned. It'd be like releasing a new product altogether, re-stimulating public interest in the PS3 in hopes of picking up the sales that have been stagnating since last Christmas.

I also read that the cooling mechanism has been entirely re-designed.

I heard about this! It's almost like an entire sequel rather than an expansion. Did they introduce an all new soundtrack as well? My craving for all things Wipeout must be satisfied.

I dunno if they added a new soundtrack or not.. I've got a 200+ song playlist on my PS3 (lots of Prodigy stuff) that I've been using for the game since day one.

They added some new music tracks, yes. Not that I ever use the them or the original default. I use my own 5GB worth of trance in the hard drive. The Fury expansion is def worth getting and the price is great too. Online Zone Battle? Can I get a hell yeah?
