What do you mean - that the lack of good presets is what holds software back?

No, the presets of softsynths like Atmosphere and Trilogy are fantastic, but that's all you get: presets. Creating your own sounds is not possible on such sample based synths.

I don't know VAZ modular, but I don't think creating good sounds with that synth is as easy as it is with a Virus or JP.

Even if there will be a softsynth as good as a virus in the near future, which costs 1/10 the price, I still won't give up my Indigo. I want to use 10 fingers when I'm producing, not just one clicking a mouse.

Well, I guess hardware is the best choice for you then. But for those of us who can only do something different with up to eight fingers at once, this might save you some money, if you can find a vsti as good as a virus:

Besides, are hardware and software really that different? Both a PC and hardware synth contain both hardware and software. The main different is control interface (knobs vs mouse) and the software. Am I wrong?

Well there are some differences between hardware and software. I don't know this for sure, but I think hardware-synth are equipped with special oscillators. I know for sure analog ones are. So you do get a different sound when using hardware instead of software.

However, these last years soft-synths have become increasingly better and I think they will be able to match or even outperform hardware-synths in the near future.

Some hardware synths have as far as I know an internal dithering / rendering up to 96Khz which cannnot be beaten by any softsynth yet I think.

Hardware sounds for me a little bit clearer and the difference between hardware and software synths is more audible if you got high quality monitors.

I think that the sound quality which can be achieved with ( home studio ) software ( synth ) is good enough to get attention from labels...

But it's impressive what results can be achieved when you have some cool hardware samples and use them in software ( CHECK This, no update since long time: http://www.angelfire.com/alt2/minds...pes/Index2.html )

or awesome software synth patches --> novation v station patches http://www.vengeance-music.de/Virus...%20Soundset.mp3 )...

1. Get Synth 1 (free)
2. Use this setting
3. Too lazy to post a midi but basically the notes are
G5 - G4 - F4 - D4 - C4 - Bb5 - A5 (2 beats)- Bb5 - A5 - G5 (2 beats)- A5 - G5 - F5 (2 beats) - G5 - A5 - D5 (4 beats)
4. Should sound similar to this

enjoy

used flstudio, so i used the default fx. basically most of the fat sounds are 2 instances of pro-53 one normal pitch, and one set with the root note higher so it makes all the notes lower. then u eq them out.

if u want the sounds msn me on msn or aim..
