I dunno, I've seen Ricardo a couple of times already and have yet to really be impressed by him. Whereas Troxler has been pretty solid every time I've see him play.

Maybe give Ricardo one more chance though ... Or not.

HMMMMMMMMMMMM

If you can't pick who you'd rather see, then make it Maison vs. Coda.

Now it's an easy choice.

Ricardo can be hit and miss, but when he's on, it's incredible. It's worth giving him another try.

Holy crap my requests of having Ricardo, Sven and Luciano this year have been fulfilled. Huge for Toronto's underground EDM scene.

Ricardo can't be missed...even at Coda. And sorry folks if I'm a realist and tell the straight truth on events.

^^track is so weird... i can see it getting polarized reviews but I love the genius on it.

Ugh.

(in case anyone was wondering what's become of the old Footwork spot)

New club converts Footwork space into upscale playpen

A new nightclub that specializes in elite bottle service has taken over the space formerly occupied by Footwork. Look for a young and monied crowd, the resurgence of the cosmo (really), and some racy talk in the washroom area. In other words, this place is pretty fun.

Read my review of ACE Nightclub in the bars section.

Gui Boratto and Elekfantz Review:

I showed up at 12:45 and walked right in with my ticket, which I was pleased about since the ticket said "line bypass until 12:30."

I think Nature of Music were on the decks, and I really enjoyed their euphoric sound.

Elekfantz came on next, a duo I'm unfamiliar with. They're a duo who perform live: vocal, percussions, etc. They have an interesting sound. Not something I would play at home, but I was happy to be exposed to something new. Then, I went outside to smoke a joint. Upon return, I felt a much deeper connection with the music and started to get more lost in my dancing. The last track Elekfantz played was awesome.

At 2:00am, the man I came to see: Gui Boratto. Gui was amazing! He plays mostly his own tracks, and it was the first set I've seen that a DJ played every track that I could have wanted him/her to play. Sort of like a 'greatest hits' set. With that said, there were a lot of amazing, funky, fun and super danceable songs I hadn't heard before and he added a lot of cool elements/played remixes of his tracks that I hadn't heard, so I still got to experience surprise. He played his remix of Massive Attack's Paradise Circus as well. So good! I was dancing with wonderful flow--having a great conversation with the music and the crowd. "No Turning Back" is the track that hooked me on electronic music about five or six years ago. Gui closed with a powerful, euphoric and more danceable re-work of No Turning Back. It omitted the vocals and was a masterful production. T'was a spiritual experience and I spent most of the song with both hands in the air and eyes closed. I left shortly after his set finished, hopped in my car, opened the sun roof and played the original mix of No Turning Back so I could hear the vocals. Ahhh so good!

A question I want to pose to TA: do you guys find Coda to be "lighter" than most clubs? I've been twice now, for Art Department/Ame and now Gui. Both nights, the vibe has been very peaceful. It seems light-hearted. I think the ambiance might be the result of a few factors: the crisp and pure sound, which they play at a nice volume as opposed to extremely loud (a conversation can be had pretty easily); the lighting which allows for more visibility than any club I can think of; and the fact that Coda's clearly not allowing in more than capacity--it's full but doesn't feel rammed. Mind you, I've only been twice. I wonder if the Beyer, Victor Calderone and Ida Endberg nights were rowdier. Thoughts?
