IDE's started getting more popular later on and everyone loved them, but from a teaching perspective Eclipse is holding your hand the entire time.

His professor is telling him he can hack anything with Linux too, so he's already at a disadvantage.

I'm not really in favor of C or C++ as first languages. They expose an extra layer of complexity (memory management) to students that are probably still getting caught up in basic stuff like variable scope and off by one errors.

I guess I can see the virtues of doing a semester or two without an IDE first.

True about the professor, lol. Everyone knows that to hack all the things what you really need is BSD.

Skinny drug addict who travels to escape his problems back home. But you were close.

I'm actually headed to Europe in a few weeks with a pit stop in Montreal.

We should grab a beer so you can see for yourself.

Agreed, and something like Python is a language that students can grasp easily where you don't always start off using an IDE that auto-completes the language's API. Although to some degree, the idea of learning the science behind the language and how pointers, compilers, and memory allocation work, you begin to learn the benefits of languages like Python (and even Java). It's how engineers should do it at least. Not community college programmers like this guy though.

Brand new programs tend to be completely uncompetitive, as they have no reputation to build off of and have to simply try to get their numbers up
