2001.5 MsgSrv32 Error under Windows98
On Tue, 27 March 2001, OC wrote: It started about a week ago when my PC just freeze when it starts up. Then I will do a ctrl+alt+delete, it shows me that 'msgsrv32(not responding)', I click on end task. Then my PC is usable again.
Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit Message Server) that performs several background functions, including the following:
Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown.
Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond.
Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system.
Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files.
Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.
Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.
It looks like your problem may be occurring under one or several of the following scenarios:
Msgsrv32 Errors with Screen Savers:
Some programs respond poorly to power management commands especially Screen Savers, try disabling Power Management if the computer hangs with Msgrsv32 errors after sitting for a while.
Msgsrv32 Errors with a Sound Blaster Card:
Windows may boot up just fine but any time you go to use a program or component which uses audio causes General Protection Faults (GPFs). This may occur from loading the drivers from the CD after windows has already detected the card and installed drivers, loading them from the CD when this occurs causes the installation program to replace some of the files with Windows 3.1 files, causing incompatibility and GPFs. Remove the Sound Blaster card from the device manager and then use the Add New Hardware Wizard and use the drivers supplied by Creative Labs. You may also have to edit your SYSTEM.INI FILE and remove references to SB16AUX, DRV, SB16AUD, DRV AND SBAWE32, DRV.
