I'll agree PVD was at his best around that time for me too, but his sets even then were very similar from city to city. To say this 1 particular night will forever be his best is kind of silly and ignorant as I highly doubt you attended any of his Love from Above/Vandit nights in Berlin, Gatecrasher/Love Parade etc etc.
As predictable as his set this past weekend might have been I found it to be way better than the sets I heard from the likes of Cosmic Gate, Ferry Corsten, Solarstone, A&B. What happened to trance? too many gay ass vocals, fluffy build ups followed by more gay ass fist pumping to the predictable breakdown before you do it all over again with an identical sounding song. |
Right on about your last point. While PVD didn't do anything extraordinary this weekend, neither did anybody else. Pick the lesser of the two poisons I guess lol..... I'm also sick of the predictability of most trance sets...... When you listen to PVD sets they are unique.... There are very few trance dj's who throw down sets that are unique, 00Flemming being one of them.
In regards to the infamous 2005 show and his sets ever since, I can say with certainty that you should go see him in other cities. Especially other big "party cities" like LA, SF, Vancouver, and go see his sets at REAL RAVES like Monster Massive, EDC, Nocturnal (All huge LA raves), or his one solo raves like he does at Roseland Ballroom. He has played some WICKED sets in LA/SF clubs and festivals. The two 08 sets he played at 1015 Folsom in SF were probably the best i've ever seen....... Miami is a special area I guess, and it is one of those cities that he tends to play "experimental." You are more likely to get consistently hard or "trancier" sets in those other cities. Vancouver BC also. When I was on the West Coast there were many times I would listen to some of his recent "experimental" recorded sets only to find that days later he would play at a local venue and throw down waaaaaaaay different. So I guess the one bad thing about him is that he doesn't play consistently from city to city....... But who really does? And when you think about it, he's an artist and has to cater to his audience that night...... Hence the reason why you get weird sets like the one at Club Glow in DC this past Thanksgiving. Tourist crowd on a holiday weekend, age 21+, in a city that isn't that big into trance, hence the reason why he tones it down a bit and plays more commercial..... If you want to hear a "harder" PVD set then go to an all age (or 18+) rave/festival. He always plays harder for "party crowds."
Also don't forget that he has ALWAYS played a variety of genres. If you look at the track lists of a lot of his older 02-05 sets there is tons of house, progressive house, techno, etc. I don't know why any of this is a surprise or why people think it's a new thing......
Also regarding his track list for his Friday set, this is WMC weekend! Is it wrong for him to play a set where 50-60% of the songs are Vandit releases. He is supporting his own artists and his label on one of the biggest weekends for electronic music wporldwide. After all, the set was going to be recorded and broadcasted worldwide......
