This makes me sad. I suppose it has a lot to do with how different it is from his previous work, whereas if it had come from a new producer it might have been taken more on its own merits. And then again, perhaps my own cheerful love of loud '90s BANG BANG electronica is simply not shared by the critically-minded.

Indeed. If only he'd posted like that more often, instead of endless "I know I'm being crazy-controversial, but this Quivver joint is dope, yall!"

Yeah, some old PVD livesets would be wicked. I remember Sasha saying in an interview he used to play at E Werk regularly in the mid-90s, and PVD would come on after him. That must have been fucking unreal, given the two were both at their absolute peak at the time.

I have a lot of stuff on my old hard drive which I will get access to when I go home to my parents house for the holidays. I will upload some stuff when I get back. I also have some really cool old Sasha sets, from the real progressive house days before it really became progressive trance, and some Sven Vath sets where he is playing trance and hard techno which are also really interesting and would probably frighten the crap out of the majority of his cocoon label fans from today.

On the RA album list, I cant believe the Scuba album wasnt ranked. That was probably my second favorite album after Solar Fields album. Really strange.

Found this online. Its mislabeled as this is from 1994 at tresor and not 1997, no way he was playing these tracks in 97. Also i think whoever uploaded it, put the tape side b first then tape side a.

the quality isnt the best but gives an idea of what was actually being played at that time. Ill upload other ones when i get a hold of them.

Paul Van Dyk Live at Tresor Berlin 1997-16-01 by Classic_House_Mixes on Mixcloud

Ill try and see if i can get a tracklist or figure out what he is playing.

UPDATE:

Found this tracklisting and definitely the tape was flipped upside down when digitized.

Jens Lissat - You Can't Escape (Paul van Dyk Remix)
?
Oliver Twisted - Spice Of Remix
Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall (Ritmo Rivals Remix)
Hanson & Nelson - Move In Motion (Part 1)
?
C*Y*B - Now (Play Mix)
Havanna - Disorder
Diddy - Give Me Love (Peach Mix)
Anna Nas - Anna Nas (Part I)
Deep Piece - Panoramic Shuffle (Who Gotcha Car Mix)
Moby - All That I Need Is To Be Loved (Melodic Mix)

here is where this starts then goes back to the top.

+ Nikolai - Ready To Flow
Plastikman - Elektrostatik
+ Marmion - Schöneberg
Mindspace - Two Minds
Infrequent Oscillation - Hihat Escalation
Rainforest - The Last Rites
?
Humate - Love Stimulation (Lovemix)
The Visions Of Shiva - How Much Can You Take? (Emotional)
DJ Joe T. Vanelli Feat. Csilla - Play With The Voice In Germany
Amorph - Astronaut
?

Elektrostatik was so far ahead of it's time it's not even funny. It sounds like something that only could have been made in the last 4 years, stylewise. And it still sounds monstrous in a club.

top tracks is out!

meh. thought there were a lot of better tracks that fit even the ra model or scene better than the ones they have. I did love time though.

UPDATE:

For instance, take inspector norse. Its a fun big room song but to me i have a hard time telling it apart from the cheesy swedish house mafia or aviici sound. Its the hipster equivalent of levels. No real substance behind the beats. Meanwhile the big room sound that was done right, Scuba-Action, isnt even on the list.

Well, under the right circumstances, Inspector Norse, does exactly what it needs to do, in the CLUB .

I agree actually, not saying I hate the song but there were better big room songs this year in my opinion and just because a song is a banger on the dance floor does that mean its the second best song of the year? The song to me just doesnt have enough depth to it.

I actually liked a decent portion of that list... Inspector Norse being a favorite of mine this year of course. But what's up with that one horrific trap song they had nominated? Or the first song they had a sample of? Both sound so ridiculously amateur.

And surprised not to see Disclosure's Control on there, or anything from Maceo or Eats Everything.

Hahaha, NO Scuba, which I find hilarious. So many blogs seem to be basically saying "SCUBA HAS GONE CHEESE MINISTRY OF SOUND LOL BYE". Whatever.

I actually can't disagree with a lot of this list, honestly.
