Coins (at least the AF does it) are little "collectable" style tokens/trophies with various squadron/unit/groups logos/designs on them.

the tradition is:

well as far as Army goes... we got them for certain milestone events or meeting a big wig hot shot ranking person type thing..

example of a coin exchange - i was given a coin from my unit upon redeploying back to the US from Iraq... (i actually got 3 from the Iraq thing)... other ones were given for being a CAO (casualty assistance officer) for a Soldier's family that died.. i had to be with them adn talk coffins and insurance monies etc.. while they dealt with loss.. first becomign an officer was another one... and other various events throughout my career...

sometimes its just dumb luck if a hot shot general walks through and he has a bunch with him he hands them out to privates or other gawking lieutenants or captains etc...

the coins are specific to the person giving them out... they are designed with teh peson in mind and are all each very different with shapes and sizes and patterns... and all sorts of shit...

so when you make colonel at year 23 or whatever you'll usually amassed quite a collection over your career and you'll probably have them displayed in your office along with all your other military accolades... which i hvae up on my walls here in my apt...

we did not do that... nobody has their own coin until at a minimum of commanding a company which is a captain w/ like 6 years in..

even then what you mentioned above was like and old school rumor like what they did back in teh day type deal... nobody in the Army does it anymore... i never saw it in 4+ years

i got a coin from our group commander because of the work i did with tropical storm erin over Oklahoma. his whole catch phrase is "domino pushing" because what we do at our squadron sets dominos in action, and the last one to fall is either a success/failure based on the first one we pushed. its kind of ghey, but whatever. but his coin he gave me is in the shape of an actual dominoe.
