Thermal expansion can be devastating in ridgid structures. if a member is un restrained, its relatively harmless but the more resistance the member encounters (ie being securely fixed at both ends), that elongation is converted into internal stress. given a ridgid enough system and a significant temperature increase, this could prove catastrophic.
point in case (from the opposite end of the spectrum) the recent collapse of the ski lift at whistler was caused by a very small layer of water that penetrated into a welded joint. when the temperature dropped, the water froze and the ice actually blew the weld out.
