Tips for Protecting the Home Computer
By JOHN MARKOFF

Botnet programs and other malicious software largely take aim at PCs running the Microsoft Windows operating system, because Windows’ ubiquity makes it fertile ground for network-based attacks.

Using a non-Windows-based PC may be one defense against these programs, known as malware; in addition, anti-malware programs and antivirus utilities for the PC are available from several vendors. Windows users should use the Windows Update feature.

Microsoft itself entered the computer-security business last year and now offers a free malware-removal tool for download from its Web site. The company says the program removes about two million pieces of malware each month, of which 200,000, or about 10 percent, are botnet infections.

Like Windows, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser is also a large, convenient target for code-writing vandals. Alternative browsers, like Firefox and Opera, may insulate users. Microsoft’s most recent browser release, Internet Explorer 7, is said to offer significantly improved defenses.

Adding software to your browser like ********, a plug-in utility, can limit the ability of remote programs to run potentially damaging programs on your PC.

Security experts also offer these tips:

¶Don’t share your computer (on which you pay your bills) with your children (who download games).

¶Use a firewall program that warns you about outgoing connections that botnets make to communicate with control software.

¶Don’t use the same password on more than one financial site.

¶Don’t let your browser store your password for such sites.

¶Don’t buy anything offered by a spammer.

¶Don’t click if someone offers you something too good to be true. It is.

JOHN MARKOFF

The biggest complaint I have with linux was trying to remember the dozens of command lines to set things up properly, that and I couldnt play Quake and other computer games on it at the time. Mind you they made it a lot prettier than I remember it being back in 1999 or whenever it was I last was given a 'linux' machine to co-habit with by my geek stepfather as some kind of parental bonding thing.

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons he still doesnt talk to me is because I installed windows 98 over it...

Well, you don't really need to worry about all that now since alot of distros have installation wizards that take care of all of that for you.

More like some people have the attention span of a fly. They just go for the easy stuff they want to read and never actually picking up a book other than "How To Use Windows XP: An Illustrated Guide".

Present company excluded:

I have this book. Ironically I don't have Linux on any PC at the moment.

Or try:

Least it got simpler, back way back when I got lumped with the box and a 350 page book on how to use it and another book which was about 600 pages of how to set up your redhat linux. I'm not very academic at the best of times and even worse if it's not something that interests me, (which it didnt and then some) it was basically enough to make a Nun say 'GOD DAMN IT!' a lot, goodness knows I did.

^^ It's really not that big hastle to install/maintain linux anymore, especially now that there's tons of forums/faqs where 99% of problems one might run in to are already answered, usually with step by step instruction on how to take care of them, even the exact commands that you can copy/paste in a console window.

The biggest task is finding a distro which supports all the hardware in your PC, i usually run into a problem with one piece of hardware or another..

I first started out trying RH8 and that was not intuitive because I didn't know Red Hat needed to be told where your windows ntfs drives were.

But there was google, so I figured that whatever error message came up I can google it. I mostly needed to try linux for gaming so it was a matter of typing simple words in google like "linux quake" or "unreal tournament linux".

It worked simple for me just like shaolin_Z says.
