Even though I wasn't there, after watching the entire thing from my home I feel I'm entitled to write a bit of a review based on what I saw in KH..
Markus Schulz:
A Solid 7/10.
Played way different than what I thought he would. Not saying that's a bad thing at all, but I felt he really lost the crowd with a few of the more drawn-out mixes. That being said, I think he did a superb job in some spots.
Grayarea:
A Solid 7/10.
Maybe it's because you're TRANCEaddicts, maybe it's because you're not all producers or performers, but I was in the ETN chat and people were quite frankly slagging off on a well done Live PA. They're entirely different from what a lot of people are used to, and while I'm not going to defend them I think one has to keep an open mind to the absolute beauty that is Progressive Breaks. For Chrissakes, he was pleading w/ the Crowd 'No more Breaks after this'. Jesus.. They (the crowd) seemed to be enjoying it quite a bit though.
Blank and Jones:
A Respectable 8/10.
I used to HATE Blank and Jones. If it wasn't a mediocre performance, it was them blantantly ripping off other reputable artists in their productions. I had no love for Jaspa or Piet. However, seeing them in action tonight actually impressed me; clever track selection, great timing, solid (albeit lightning quick) beatmatching and a great feel to the set really left me wishing they'd stay on another hour. Christ knows Lowell'd loved that. Throw in some tasty singalongs and a stomper of a classic to top it off and you have a very happy camper.
Armin van Buuren:
An Outstanding 9/10.
Whoo, yeah. Armin got the big points here. Not for any reason other than personal preference. He started off as he typically does, but rather than play the same shit he does on ASOT, he reads the crowd and goes hard. As our good man Dennis Hahn would say 'Jesus Christ, Armin must have been Angry. He went HARD.' That statement summed up his performance at Decadence II and would fit well here. With tracks like 'Damager 02', 'Cherry Blossom' and 'Play it Louder' (FUCK YEAHHH), This man came to leave you all with your ears ringing and your asses sore. Even Anthems like Greece 2000 were played in the Mark Norman form, thus kicking serious ass even further. Epic Trancers should have been pacified with Inertia, Menno de Jong's latest and even an unreleased Robert Nickson track. It would have been the vocal one after 'Children of the Sun'.
I can safely say that the party going on in Kool Haus was one hell of a shindig, and I now wish I had come despite my incredibly poor health. Two days recovery in a hospital would have been WELL worth it. |
great review, agree 100% although I found Armins set a little too hard, maybe it was me and running out of gas to fully appreciate his set.
We started off with some nice pre-drinks at my buddies house which was up the road from the Guv, we arrived at 11pm, massive line-up, lucky we all had tickets, and managed to get by the line no problems, thanks to some hook-ups at the door. Went into the Kool Haus room, Markus Shultz was warming up the crowd. Wasn’t really feeling the trance he was laying down, so we jetted to the Government side of the place to hear some John Digweed, amazing, the man rocked it, crowd went nuts. We then left at 2 to check out Blank and Jones back in the Kool Haus, simply amazing, they haven't been in Toronto, and the place went off. Agree, best track of the night had to be the The Killers - Mr. Brightside though. Armin jumped on the decks at around 4. at this time I was running out of gas, still a pretty good set from Armin. Not the uplifting progressive trance I was hoping for, or remember from his amazing set back on Valentines day, but still solid. Still he dropped "Shivers", "Purple Haze- Adreneline".
We jetted at 6, and the party was still going strong. Apparently went well into the morning.
Shout out to the usual partners in crime, and Kev, Michelle, sneaky pete. Great to run into a few other tribers there as well. Although seemed to loose sight of most during the night.
Pictures to follow this week.
To all that are bitching and complaining. The line-up was sick, you have to expect that kinda crowd. I will say the crowd in the KH was DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT and more friendlier than the Guv, but that was just me.
