With the exception of James Lavelle, all the Dj's that have done GU's have made their names from Dj-ing primarily and not their production. A GU dj must have the ability to get sounds from a whole range of artists and create soundscapes that can actually mean something, and its for this reason that the GU series have become so popular.

GU is a series for Dj's, not producers wanting to be Dj's.

How boring is a GU gonna be if you have a tracklising like

CD1
Hybrid - Title
Artist - Title
Hybrid - Title
Artist - Title (Hybrid Mix)
Maurice - Title
Hybrid - Title
Artist - Title
Artist - Title (Hybrid Mix)
Hybrid - Title

I personally think a GU would be stupid if it just turned into an artist mix. I mean its stupid enough that we get the likes of Digweed & Deep Dish getting away with GU's as Bedrock or Yoshitoshi release samplers.

1) Livesets don't sell albums, funnily enough, being part of a mix series does (Essential Mixes, GU, etc), what better way to expose your own material. Look at the G&D essential mix, almost every tune was either their own, or a remix of theirs. Artists know that by playing their own stuff to mass audiences, gets mass exposure. Simple business philosophy: play to a crowd live, play to your bank accounts for cd's.

2) Deep Dish & Digweed play upfront stuff, which eventually gets released on their own labels (Yoshitoshi & Bedrock respectively). Why? Because mix albums generate hype over specific tracks, so they hold off on releasing it, so as to capitalise on selling as many records as possible. Examples: Luzon - Manilla Sunrise (Yoshitoshi) (on GU021) and Fortunato & Montsressor - Imagine (Bedrock) (on GU006).

**Imagine, was actually limitedly released on some obscure label ages ago, now has finally seen the light of day on Bedrock.

i dont think that a mix has to be boring if its original material. just because you are first known for your work and not your djing does not mean you cant dj. there are a ton of great djs that dont produce that would never get a GU album. in this day and age you have to do both, regardless of which comes first.

that being said i dont know whether GnD would make a decent GU mix, but that doesnt mean that they absolutely couldnt try, or at least be a possibility.

im not sure what youre getting to here, especially after you said this:

To be honest I don't like the idea of G&D, Hybrid or any other well know producers doing a GU.

why would Sasha or Digweed, along with many others be 'okay' GU mixers, but not other producers/djs? and if you cant judge mixing, style and substance by a normal live set im not sure why slapping an official sounding name(EM GU) on it makes it more acceptable. if you simply think that hyrbid or GnD would be boring people by trying to sell their work on a GU i think thats somewhat of a mistaken assumption. Hybrid for one releases artist cds, so i dont think they would need GU to pimp their material for them. GnD isnt a shoe-in, but isnt necessarily an attention whore either- we simply dont know how it would turn out. (sidenote: if you dont like a particular artist it doesnt mean they wouldnt make a good GU album. if GU albums are all supposed to sound the same and be equally accepted theyre of no use whatsoever). i know dave has been djing for a while and just because he got well known for his work doesnt mean he couldnt mix a good set with or without his own shit.

i think the problem with GU, GU mixes, and the GU boards is that its a bunch of prog whores that think that only certain artists have 'credibility' enough to participate. i agree that some artists really arent suited for a GU mix, but if the only requirement is to: a)not play your own work and; b)play shit either no one listens to, or has heard of before- there are a shitload of potential cantidates. many of which arent relegated to the usual suspects we always see with GU.

If hybrid did a mix, they would use unreleased breaks tracks from distinctive breaks and they would not play all their own stuff. Tho Adam Freeland would be another good one. What about Holden? my gosh would'nt he use some of his own tracks.
