1. whether you admit it or not, this whole thread is a huge insult to american society. i agree that there are areas in america where people tend to be more violent. this is due to lack of education involving how to deal with conflicts. you are right. per capita, americans are more violent than most citizens of european nations.

2. Saying that americans can not do anything about the violence is also an insult (1) the american education and judicial system and (2) american citizens.

think before you speak.

well.

very rarely will you find anyone on the internet bashing their own country, regardless of where they come from. take a look-

just because people from the US end up always having to explain themselves to people from other countries doesnt mean they love the US, or at least love everything about it.

when people judge an entire society on one movie, one news report, one person, etc, etc and then expect one person(from said society) on the internet to have all the answers or agree with them it all gets fucked up. i certainly dont like everything about the US, but yah, i will defend it to a certain degree-

especially against someone who is just using one highly biased 'documentary' movie to justify what little they know about a country they dont live in.

anyone who used Bowling For Columbine as a reason to hate the US or a reason to never visit has to reevaluate what they actually know about the country.

-no, we dont all love, know or bow down to Bush.
-no, we all dont live in fear of everything within the country.
-the poor in the US live better that the poor in many other countries, even without socialist welfare
-no, visiting one place in the US does not justify greater generalizations of a country with 280-300 million people in it
-most murders are among people that know each other, so its not likely youll get killed in a drive by or someother horseshit

/end defensive rant...im still in sweden |

the movie is great and confirms a lot of what europeans think about the US. you have to watch out though to believe everything without thinking, as michael moore is not a saint either and manipulates a lot in this movie

so people want to defend the place they live. so of course, in this thread, people are gonna deffend america. saying that america sucks is pretty much saying that the person sucks who lives there. so therefor there really cant be anyone who is antiamerican or they wouldnt be living here OMG. however u can take into account the apathetic americans. I live in a middle class town/family and ive never seen anyone shot, killed, or die. so america has a lot of homicides, i dont see america going to the dumps. i see darwinism at its finnest. there is a lot of shit in this country, but they not all from here you know. the trash can take care of itself, and i live on. we havent been here for 1000s of years with a rich history and unity where everyone learned to live with each other. people come to america to get away, and if u get in their way you may get shot.
People who thought america was all fine and dandy before seeing this film is stupid for believing all the gay propaganda in the first place.

So you are not blaming everyone for the problem, but you still would like to make the generalization that everyone has the problem.

I already stated how this is just a minute portion of the population that commits these crimes. (10.2 per 100,000 peoples) Yet you still would like to say that it is the whole society.

quote:

Like a guy said, teachers tell you if u fail at school u will be poor and weak in the future, what's the impact on students like u and me about that...people get depressed and forced to succeed at school, they think they are nothing, a worthless person...The general idea is that this movies shows u that America is a very manipulating country, they hammer it in you right from the start.

Generally it is true that if you do not have any education, you will not be able to be sucessful in modern society. So what. You're mad that the teachers are telling kids that it is good to do well in school so that they can live productive lives when they grow up.

How exactly is that manipulating??
Isn't that just telling the truth of the matter? Isn't that preparing children for the society for which they are going to live in. Isn't that the point of our Educational institutions.

What country does not do any manipulating whatsoever then?

quote:

Those guys who fail at school get depressed and they shoot everything that moves? Why?

Some people are sociopaths. Get over it and move on with life. Guns were just an outlet of the sociopathic behavior. If not guns it would have been something else.

quote:

Then we have the fact that "everyone" just needs a gun there to feel safe (note everyone between brackets...)
It's not normal that there are people that need a gun to feel safe...

I would say that it is a minority of people that need to have a gun to feel safe. a large number of people use their guns for recreation, or hunting purposes.

quote:

It's just wrong, but yeah then u have some sick heads who promote guns, and everything is possible, u can get it when u open a bank account, u can get it everywhere...

I have never hear of a bank doing a promotion where you get a gun when opening a checking account.

There are laws for who can own guns and how they can aquire them in the US.

quote:

It's normal that a few people out of those millions are gonna use it in a bad way...
U know what I mean....If u walk with a gun in your hand in America, it's like the most normal thing on earth, while if u walk with a gun here, people are confused, afraid...
U won't see someone walking around with a gun here, never saw someone.

If you walked downtown with a rifle in the open i think people would be confused and afraid. that is just a horrible argument.

quote:

So the chance of murdering is 1000% more in America...

you got a source on that

quote:

Not insulting Americans here, u can't do anything about it, it's the society that grew like this...

I would tell you the real reasons for the "gun problem" in the US, but i would be considered a racist among other things by you people on the boards. It seems it is only okay to say broad negitive generalizations about Americans on this board.

Bowling for Columbine was very well done. Unfortunately it made a point that seems to be true, and that is that gun control will not stop gun violence. The violence comes from society itself, and only a drastic change in american culture will curb that violence. Of course I dont see that happened anytime soon.

Some of those statistics amazed me though. What was the number in Japan? Like 20 or something ridiculous? w o w

So many quotes Neo Nero

Of course I'm putting some sentences together and all u can do is proving the opposite of my writings...
It's ofcourse easy like that, U are a person who wants to defend his country I would do the same...
I had no idea about America, but after watching this movie it opened my eyes widely, I was shocked.
I dunno if u saw the movie, imagine yourself as an outsider and watch the movie, what would u think?
Of course u all feel offended by the fact I generalise all things a bit. That was for sure not my intention.
If I say the society it doesnt mean "the people" or "you" or "that black guy walking the streets", no I mean the general way of living, the way things go....
And ofcourse I know that U and your neighbour and your family have no bad intentions or would kill someone.
But isn't it true American is the most patriottic (or how u say it)
country in the world?
Isn't it true people sing their national anthem at school, that Ubermensch thing is so hammered into the children at school, it's a national feeling, I think u don't realise that because u all have the same thoughts about it but as an outsider like me, it's a completely different view. Dunno about the singing at schools, but if it's true I think it's completely pathetic, while it's the most normal thing on earth for u. But ever stood still by the fact why is this for.
It's in your undercounciousness (spelling...:S) U'r proud of America.
I think noone here in belgium is proud of our country, only when Peter van Petegem or Johan Museeuw win the Ronde van Vlaanderen or Parijs Roubaix, moments like that make me a proud citizen of my country, other then that, I don't care...
I saw on the news People, a nurse and a man over 50 years old were send to the war...and u know what they say: "I do it for my country"
Geez, there must be something really wrong there.
If one asked me to be a volunteer to go in the war I would say, fuck u bitch go die yourself for this country I don't give a shit, I live to be happy, not for my country!
I'm talking about the war now but just wanted to say this.
People are so manipulated overthere, and no don't go think that I mean u or your friend or whoelse.
But from what I have seen there were a lot guys going to Iraq....
One guy at the news said: We bombed that house very well, it was right on the spot! in an ironic way....of course it's only one guy but it says a lot about the mentality there.
It's just wrong.

And of course America has so many citizens so the more citizens the more kills is normal, well like one said, what about Japan...only 20 kills in a year, and I don't think Japan is a small country...

Are u afraid to say there is something really wrong there?
Why does Bush wanna rule the world, why?
For his fame, his proud for his country, it's all hammered into the minds since the beginning...

note: I have nothing aginst you or whoelse's american person.
U can't do anything about it.

Of course it's an insult, the country is just wrong, not you and your friend, not your dog, not your g/f, not Geo Neo, the society.

Who said americans cant do anything about the violence?
Of course they can, but it's a matter of 100-1000 years maybe.
Another president would be a nice idea...
