I never understood that policy either. Why should a company look over someone that might be more qualified for a position just to forfil a mandated quota?

hmm.. i dunno, i feel like it's unfair to generalize and say 'women want equality but they also want chivalry." i want equality and politeness and consideration. i want to be polite and considerate myself.

i have given up my seat in a longue to a guy that looked tired so he could sit down. i don't expect ppl to give up their seats. i totally appreciated it when i guy looked at me, my massive boots, ascertained that i was tired and offered me his seat.

if you don't think it's right to be chivalrous, don't do it. why bother behaving that way and then bitching about it. stand up for your beliefs and deal w/ teh consequances.


i mean, i think it's more about consideration. matt unlocks my door 1st and opens it, but then i reach over to his side and unlock his door. what is so terrible about that?

Most women i know don't expect a man to be chivalrous, but they do appreciate it when you are. Chivalry and equality have nothing to do with one another. Opening a door for a women, letting her take your seat on a crowded bus, these things are simply a matter of courtesy as far as i'm concerned. There have been several instances when women won't accept the offer to take your seat, but will still smile at the jesture.

OK the whole idea about affirmitive action (IMO) was that people from visible minorities (possibly) did not have the means to go to the rich school, the name brand schools and such, look lets get a little UN-pc and spell out the truth, the poorest individuals in our country at the moment are single moms, and minorities, they may simply not have the means to get an education as say the majority. So in turn affirmative action was meant to equal out the job population. Its not that wrong if you think how socialistic Canadian society really is. It is definatly not a perfect system, but its a small step in trying to really have equal rights between all, eventually the sytem will get better and the right person will be hired for the right job, no matter the race, colour, creed, sex.

When it comes to chivalry now, to be honest, I only give up my seat on the subway to old men and women.. everybody else can just stand for all I care. I always open the door for anyone behind me, no matter female or male, its just a matter of good manners! Though when I go out with my female friends I do somtimes pay for the entire tab, and not with the males, I think i'm diffenatly in err for that, I should defiantly stop doing that. When it comes GFs and such, I dunno somehow I don't feel right if i'm not paying, (unless i'm poor which has happend before) Its just the gender role position that we've all been brainwashed into beleiving. Simple as that. Until society draws no lines between genders, and boys get pink frilly shoes when there born, not blue sweaters or hats or something, then we'll all be playing our respective gender roles.

There's what I was waiting to hear... good stuff.

I always open the door or at least hold it open, I don't let it slam in someone's face. If I go out to eat with my roommates or a small group of friends then I might offer to pay, regardless of whether or not there are any females in the group. It's a matter of, as he said, common courtesy and simple politeness.

That said, if I'm going to give money to a stranger, I think the homeless and dishevelled deserve my hard-earned cash a lot more than some extravagantly-dressed and cosmetically-enhanced princess in a nightclub. Let's not forget that chivalry comes from an age where feminism was unheard of and women were expected to be submissive - just as it would have been disgraceful for a man not to open the door for a woman, it would have also been disgraceful for a woman to stick her nose in the air, turn tail, and shove her palm in the face of a guy who says, "That's a nice hat you're wearing."

The irony as I see it is that the stuck-up ones usually end up with the players and wonder why they can't just find a nice guy. Because the old-fashioned "knights" will invariably fail with the snobs. So there is balance.
