Hollands reputation as "Trance Nation" comes from the Events and Clubs they have not from the record stores. Record stores are imo no criteria when it comes to being a "Trance Nation". I can tell you from various trance events I`ve been to in Holland.

I think Canada is quickly catching up, not so much in terms of djs and producers but in terms of a following. the HMV in downtown Toronto has a Huge electronic section. I live just toronto, and the hmv near my place has a big section too. Im pleased with it. the cd's are still too expensive to be mainstream, so i stick with downloading live mixes. I know more people who are getting into trance, but most stil regard it as stupid and repedative. The prices for the music dont help to populate it, but for that i am thanksful. As soon as it gets popular the quality will die, and along with it, most of our souls.

I did hear Iio - At the end, on the radio the other day. and castles in the sky, thats as far as peoples trance knowledge goes though.

We Dutch are lazy asses who don't buy albums but download them.

And the people who do buy records do it online, because they have no time to go to the shops or risk out-of-stock.

haha..hardstyle isnt all that bad..hell im lisening to it right now..but i still like trance and techno as well no reason to be so against it..i mean its all electronic music so it should all be respected..blah!! btw that sad there in holland about the record stores..hell i live in a somewhat small city in california and even we have a record store with trance and gabber as well as house very nice

It's true about the record stores, although I can't believe you didn't see Armin, Ferry or Tiësto cd's in a store. They sell them almost everywhere.

I think Holland got its name as 'Trance Nation' because of the parties and clubs, as mentioned above. But most important: because of the producers.

lol, you obviously went to the wrong record stores and places.were you expecting everyone to like trance? i don't like salsa and i'm from puerto rico, a salsa nation, the place were the music is fucking made, just like holland with trance. that's not very surprising either.

whatever, all i know is that a foreigner living in holland i encounter trance everywhere in the most random of places. i've also been to the best parties of my life here, they're ridiculously good in terms of attendance, crowd involvement, and dj following. when i go back to new york next semester i don't think i'll be able to go out, because clubbing over there will seem so meaningless after this experience. a concept such as tiesto in concert would only work here and in the uk, it would fail anywhere else. for a country of less than 20 million people, the magnitude of all the big parties are impressive.

the first day i was here i walked down the market and i heard Driftwood-Freeloader. i can't even remember all the times i've walked into a burger king and heard a Gatecrasher or MoS compilation. or the coffeeshop where they play ISOS 2 all the time. right now i'm seeing Tiesto in Concert on MTV. or the flyers everywhere and TV ads for Sensation, Dance Valley, MysteryLand, Trance Energy etc.

if there's such thing as a trance nation, for me, holland is it.

well i personally have 2 good friends from Holland, we meet every summer in holidays here in Greece and they dont know anything from trance...maybe coz they are girls but i think that has nothing to do with it...i even managed to give them cds to listen and the were surpsised when i told them this music "should" be popular in Holland...also there 2 other friends of me from German that also come here the summers dont know shit about Paul van dyk etc...they told me many times that in their country punk is more popular than this "trance"...i also asked them if they know the LoveParade and they said "No"...well i was amazed but i think trance is more underground than we think and i like it....

btw just the other day i was in best buy and they had a section for electronic music...had the ferry costa cd and some essential mixes as well! and much more wich is very nice..atleast for me since i saw no one else in the section buyin stuff! bwahhaha..all mine!!

I was at the San Francisco virgin megastore and it was funny because I was looking in the electronica section and I swear there were maybe two other Americans... but it was full of people with English accents...and a couple Japanese tourists... l8ers
