Thanks for all the info guys...

Basically, I want the laptop to be my PC. So I want to be able to do almost everything on it. Burn CDs, watch DVD (with 5.1 sound if possible!), use the internet (obviously!), listen to music, and maybe play games too... Battery life and weight are not that important since it will be plugged in most of the time...

[edit] I sound like a fkn n00b!!! [/edit]

You'll be suprised to find out what you can't do with even the fastest laptop!!! They're mainly made for word processing and internet browsing etc. To answer the question regarding AMD mobile processors visit this link they have something up in their sleeve against Centrinohttp://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20030507/index.html

Conclusion; there is nothing like a desktop computer to replace it with a laptop is to think like to replace a mainframe with a desktop PC. everything has its limitation and a laptop is definately not a substitute for a PC........

I think the return rates speak for themselves. Return rates (for repair that is) quoted on the first gen of Nokia camera phones was almost 80%.

The first MS SmartPhone couldn't dial people from your phonebook if their surname stared with U or greater.

The first gen 3G phones have suffered from poor build quality.

The networks don't seem to be up to speed on full MMS integration... the list is almost endless.

Whats the best sound quality available on a laptop? Anything like what you can achieve on a standard desktop PC, or of lesser quality?
Thanks

best sound quality? For a non-mac machine it is pretty much utterly shit. You can however get external usb sound which is very nice and supported under all the major os's.

I use a Griffin iMic on my Dell laptop. You can find them in most Apple Centres around the place, for about AU$100, or you can pick them up from the states for US$35+pp

I've found it to be a nice versitile device, fully supported under WinXP (drivers are built-in), input only under Win2K, and fully supported under ALSA/Linux.

It's got a pretty good SnR and noise floor. That can be improved a little if you use an externally powered bus (USB hub).

It supports up to 24bit/48kHz in and out. I haven't tested if I can use it to output sound at the same time it's sampling though. YMMV.

I found it to be on-par with my Soundblaster Live! Value, but it's certainly not audiophile quality.

Thanks man for the info about the imic, i'd never heard of it before and it sounds like exactly what i need. I've just got a new laptop(compaq armada m700) and the sound quality REALLY annoys me. You can hear unhealthy noises each time you move the mouse, etc! So usb audio sounds great and $100 is so cheep compared to the other stuff you can get. Thanks for the alsa info to, as linux is the only os i've got....
