I always find it funny how paranoid people are about on-line fraud, but never about more common and very simple credit card fraud. How many people could easily rip off your number? The kids in the store never looks at your receipts? Anyone working with any sort of sales software has access to thousands of card numbers. Picking up numbers on-line has to be about the hardest method of finding a credit card to rip off.

Well credit card numbers aren't actually fully printed on receipts (for obvious security reasons!)so the 'kids' can't get your number that way. If paying by credit card in a shop it's safe so long as you make sure you have sight of your card the whole time, make sure thay give it back to you ASAP!

Yeah, dumper diving has been around for as long as those clunky old credit card impression things. I went to a hair dresser once and that's all they had. I had to explicitly ask for the carbon sheet.

There's some pretty cleverly done frauds doing the rounds at the moment, including a very well done one for stealing people's eBay accounts. The email is well written and constructed, and the URL is quite cleverly done... they made a HREF to their URL with the text as an eBay.com official URL.

I'm just waiting for someone to get clever with javascript and hide it even better...

shit yeah, since paypal are owned by ebay now, the same thing is doing the rounds for paypal accounts.

Scary how close they get to the real thing - with official URLs, text and everything.

Hmmmm seems i recall being young and stupid once upon a time too. My first time i'd found a pornsite and was in a world of glee indeed until i saw the old enter your credit card no to access the rest of this site, we won't charge you a cent. it's just to verify your over 18 so being bright i grabbed moms and voila! i had a 100$ cred charge on her card to some x rated porn site and i killed two birds with one stone, i got busted and i had to pay the 100 bucks.

I have never and will never make another online purchase of any kind since then. I'll pay in cash or with eftpos but credit cards suck AsXs0r.

I should know, i used to be a credit card salesman lol!!

Okies, I did'nt want to start a new thread, and since its related to this topic, I might as well post it in here.

Anyways:

I'd like to nominate myself for DUMBASS OF THE WEEK award.

The story as it follows:

So I got my new credit on Tuesday, got it activated and so forth - the first thing I done: VINYL SHOPPING (on the net). It was only like $80 worth. So everything went fine until today I checked up the credit status through NetBank. Apparently I've spent $600 yeseterday - so, being very paranoid after the first credit card incident, I rang up the centre and asked them what was going on. They said I spent $600 yesterday - I said I did'nt. So I cancelled my credit account AGAIN. I was thinking WHY??!?!?! Surely this can't be right - why does all this bad shit happen to me.
Until, suddenly, a light bulp flashed above my head but then shattered into 8.23 million pieces. I DID SPEND $600 yesterday!!! 2 bottles of wine! ARRRGGGHHHH! I rang up the centre again asking if it was possible to cancel the cancellation LOL But it was too late! The lady operator must have thought I was a dumbass!

ARRGGGHH!! So now I have to wait for yet another card due to my forgetfulness. My memory isnt as good as it used to be. (I wonder why ) ...

So the conclusion to this silly saga: Tiz good to be cautious but not too good to be paranoid! and no more parties for me for a while...

Paranoia @ its extreme:

I brought the wine through the phone so it wouldnt have been shipped out to me until mid next week, the payment was still pending, so I cancelled the account before it even got finalized, so I'll have to re-buy the wine again next week.
