Not really. I can skip through a track and enjoy it too. Of course, progression and layering is key in trance tracks, but eventually you develop the habit of skipping through and finiding the breakds/builds/leads/etc..

I live in San Diego, and it's so fucking true. Try going to school down here...

We listen to music for what it is, don't we? NOT because people like it or not. |
most people (in high school and the likes) listen to the music they do because of the pressure of other people around them “the cool complex”, i listened to trance/techno since the beginning of high school, i love it more than anything, whenever someone tries to make fun of me because of it, i just smile at them and completely agree with whatever there saying, "its the same thing over and over again," i say "thats why i like it so much!," then i continue to bob my head and smile. Had i been the slightest bit insecure about my love for this genera of music i would have been the class reject. At least twice every day someone would try to make fun of me because I liked trance, because I walked down the halls bobbing my head without any shame, because I started a school sponsored club called “Club Techno,” because I stood up for something I love, because I DJed at the last assembly of my high school carrier, and because I said FUCK YOU to everyone who doesn’t think trance/techno is “cool”. If you love trance (and chances are with this genera if you listen to it you love it) why do you listen to rap when you’re with your friends…. because … why? because they like rap? They’re friends with you too, aren’t they? they like what you like right? FUCK RAP, LISTEN TO TRANCE listen to something you like, if your ashamed to tell them or ANYONE you like trance and that it is what you listen to, then you should be listening to rap, you scared pasty white child….
Wow I almost cry writing that

^^Agree completely. You should have faith in your music, of all us tranceaddicts out here, 99% truly do love the music and would take a huge stand to protect it, I sure as hell know I would. I only have 3 other friends that like trance a lot as well, only 1 of which is into it as much as I am. It's a small crowd, but you know what? It is a tighter, more unified community than most other genres of music junkies out there.
Also, hip-hop is a culture wave hitting North America right now, it'll pass just as all other culture themes have passed, we just can't say what it will be. Remember the 60's with the rock and roll, 70's with the disco, 80's with the grunge rock, and then 90's with the boy bands, we'll see something in the future, just who knows? And also, as you can see, hip-hop is aimed at the younger generation, as people mature and get older, many people fall out of the hip-hop craze (as I did) because it isn't exactly the most mature genre/culture out there.

if you want trance to stay good, then you can't let it become mainstream. I said it before and I'll say it again, the last thing you want is trance radio stations. I go to school up in Northern California and in the Bay Area they had at least 2 stations playing "trance" which consisted of that "Nobody Listen to Techno" remix thing and DJ Jean - "The Launch", just to name two. If trance ever replaces hip-hop, then that is probably the day the originality and creativity of it ends. They did have some cool progressive mixes late at night.
Also, to go on the issue about people listening to a certain type of music because it's "cool" or "accepted", you better get used to it. It is not just the musical aspect of it, but the entire US culture and probably mankind. It's probably embedded since we are very little into thinking that being "different" is NOT GOOD. That's why you see kids getting picked on or being made fun of because they're different (i.e. physically deformed or mentally retarded people).
Going back to the topic, I sure wish trance doesn't replace hiphop or pop music for that matter. Sure, I could always listen to something that's mainstream ala "radio music", but I sure enjoy listening to music that I know is unique in my community.
LOL @ the people who think one music genre is better than another. You people need to grow up.

Well, I'll just leave you where you are. No need to waste time on this one.
This makes absolutley no sense. Just because a song is mainstream doesn't mean it sucks, and just because a genre is mainstream doesn't mean it sucks either. What do you consider mainstream? TV/Radio airtime? Tiesto's remix of Silence got alot of airtime, and has become pretty mainstream if you ask me, but that doesn't take away any quality that that track posesses. How bout them Spider-Man commercials using Heaven Scent as the BGM?.Popularity, as loosely defined as it is? It's safe to say that in many European countries, trance and electronica in general has become the staple genre of music in their respective industries. I read somewhere that electronica has become the biggest music business in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe.
That's mainstream if you ask me. But does that mean it sucks? Of course not. As far as that 50 comment you made, sure, he's become mainstream...fuck that, he's pop now, but look at others on this board wearing PvD shirts and what not. If that's not mainstream in it's respective territory, then please tell me what is.
Right. We are all unique. Just like everyone else. What kind of credit or personal comfort does it give you to know that you listen to trance, just like millions worldwide and is part of a messageboard, just like thousands of others? Just like how electronica has it's subdivisional groups(househeads, junglists, tranceaddicts )Hip hop has it's sub-culture groups as well...taggers, breakers, DJs, MCs...so just because we like trance, and represent a small group of people doesn't make us any better, or unique. We just happen to like a musical genre that some people don't.
It'll be the same whether trance becomes mainstream or not.
Trance will never replace hip hop. Hip hop will never replace trance. Nothing will replace hip hop, just like how nothing will replace trance. We listen to music for what it is, don't we? NOT because people like it or not. |
ONO ITS THE SAVIOUR OF HIP HOP!
