Now I have to get books, and that's going to be about $950 after taxes.

I have no sympathy. In my last two years, I paid $15K and $16K respectively. At western. For an undergrad. Nevermind close to $2000 in books per year, and a mandatory (!!!) laptop.

Did you know that because Ivey's tuition was deregulated, it was able to be increased to partially cover the costs of programs like yours, which have tuition caps? Maybe that will put things in perspective for ya.

just like anything else, tuition has to rise with inflation. What they should do however is to tie its increases closely to the CPI index so that atleast they're not causing a socioeconomic gap in the processs..

My first 2 years of tuition are pretty much free, costing 470 euros for 2 yrs.

After that tho... 5200 euros per semester for the last 2 years!!! Just thinking of it makes me feel like crying
I'm going to spend my first 4 years of work paying back tuition... oh the joy.

I paid 3995.95 as a first installment. Will have to pay 6147 and change in total. My tuition went up by 258 dollars just from last year. I think that's pretty bad. They don't increase the amount that you are getting paid but they increase the amount that you have to pay.

But I would never go to school in the USA...aside from their big schools, where tuition amounts to over $25,000 US dollars a year, our universities are actually better than their moderate ones. And our system actually WAS very Liberal in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Just about anyone with decent marks could go at an affordable price. My high school teacher went to UWO in the late 80's and paid 300 dollars per course.

You're getting way off here....You're getting an Ivey Business degree...and you'll probably end up with a very high paying job.

WHat I'm talking about is......the GOVERNMENT should be funding most of undergraduate fees for ANYONE who has good marks. The Tories have cut back and cut back (on everything else as well) over the last 8 years. It's getting to the point where working class families cannot afford over $5,000 dollars a year. OSAP is non-existent unless you live on your own or are on some government assistance program. University education in Canada SHOULD NOT EVER be for the richer classes. The USA is already like that...do we want to be like them?

See, no I completely disagree. The reason why tuition costs in Ontario specifically (go to B.C. and tuition is less than $3,000) is because the Ontario Conservative party has rolled back on education subsidies since their election win under Mike Harris in 1995. Tuition as a total fee for a basic science, arts or social science program in Ontario costs around $10,000 a year. The Ontario government now pays less than 50%. Tution as UWO in 1988 was $1500 a year....15 years later it is over $5200. That's what...a 300% increase? That's certainly NOT inflation.

I'm a little surprised how right wing some of you guys are on here (this doesn't apply to Desidel directly)...

Actually, no. I just graduated and I'm not making much more than the average starting salary for grads from all programs.

This is where my frustration lies, partially....the image of the school seems to be justifying the ridiculous tuition in the eyes of those who don't know any better. Truth is, many many MANY companies didn't give a shit if I went to Ivey or Queens or York.

ya but thats the point, people really dont know any better, these universities are charging more because of their image, just like every other product out there

of course for unis there are a lot more reasons as well...but thats one that contributes to the rise

Charity begets more charity.

Problem is, government was involved in a lot of things in the past and now we're all paying for that with the advent of the GST, and the fire sale of all their crown corporations.
Besides, why should my working dollar pay for someone else's schooling???

And don't get me started on OSAP...that's a dog that sticks to yea for YEARS after all is said and done.
It took my wife at least 7 years to pay that sucker off and that was even when *gasp* there were Government Grants...
She's been through several full time jobs but the government still wants their $$ back, whether you're working or not...

There is no such thing as good grades = good job anymore.
It's become more a mixture of experience (<-- real world), adaptability & people skills, with certifications or wall plaques for support.

Corporations don't care about people, they care about their bottom dollar.
I've been laid off from 3 full time jobs since I've been in the working force and I'm only 33.
It's a reality I have to accept.

In short:
1) Have a plan "B" if the plan "A" isn't doing so well.
2) Don't expect the government to give handouts.
3) If one can't afford school, get a job or start a business until you can afford to. People never appreciate free things anyways; post-education is no different...(you can literately pick out which students who paid their own way as apposed to those that didn't).

Again, I don't want to seem negative and I know I'm sounding that way, but I'm just telling it to you all straight from someone who's walked that mindfield and recently.

More Government is NOT an answer IMHO (it never is).

Oh, and by the way......I AM paying my own way....I'm not getting handouts from anyone. It just doesn't leave much room leftover for anything else..

Ever heard the term "investing in our future"?? Well, university students ARE the future....

That's awesome that you are paying your own way; thumbs up!

Yea...I guess the world could always use more teachers...
