Maxtors are teh sux. Mine makes clicking noises. The only thing their good for is the cheap price they come by. Unfortunately, it's still like buying a peice of shit cheaply.

Maxtor did make shit drives, about 5 years ago, but those days are long over.

I find that hard drive "trouble" from different brands varies from person to person. You say "never ever buy an IBM" but I have never had any problems with IBM drives, the lab I worked in used to have 40 of them in our fileserver running under heavy loads from both web and unix scratch disk operations. I personally have not had good experiences with Quantum drives and have had excellent experience with Seagate. A friend of mine has had exactly the opposite experience.

Yes, every drive can fail. Some models are more prone than others. It is a mechanical device and any mechanical device will fail, especially ones that are as precise as a hard disk has to be.

BACK IT UP IMMEDIATELY!

Has saved my ass twice in the past.

i agree with dignut, all drives have failures, maxtor is no worse than the rest. btw i own 40g maxtor and western digital drive, so i guess that would make me qualified...

Make an encrypted image of your HD, and split it into ~700mb files. Rename them into names such as DvDrip_Lord_of_the_Rings_II_JkWrls_2003.avi

Actually, you're right MrS, I should revise that - IBM drives for servers have an excellent reputation, it's just their workstation drives that are often troublesome.

But yes, it is very individual, and no matter what the statistics show about a particular drive, it is still only a probability and not a given.

It's just in the case of someone saying that "this drive sucks", that I ask that that person actually show some statistical evidence, or else limit their commentary to "I've had bad experience with this product."

http://www.storagereview.com/ is a good site for harddrives, they have a database of user submited feedback on drives.

ALWAYS make backups, theres other reasons to other than a faulty harddrive such as; theft of pc, fire in house, friend doing a format c: for a joke, virus etc

As to drive reliability, i've used seagate, WD, maxtor and fujitsi, the only drive iv had problems with was the seagate which i returned under warenty and got a replacement, and the replacements started to act all weird again now, though seagate only send out "repaired" drives as replacements and never brand new ones...

My 40gig Maxtor drive is still going strong after a year of constant abuse...perhaps you were just unlucky, although the specific problem you're having sounds a bit peculiar.
