Well, actually, there are so many interpretations of the law that I'm not entirely sure myself. I'd like to get me a copy of the Finnish Law book and settle this for good.

I know that in the 1960's most Finnish tracks were actually covers of British/American songs but... hmm...

it's a strange situation

lots of records that hit the charts in Belgium are covers as well..

that desenchantée tune by kate ryan was produced without permission of mylene farmer.. in an interview kate said (after the track had been #1 on the charts for a few weeks) "we might send it off to mylene and see if she likes what we've done with it"

sometimes artists get away with it sometimes they don't

i think it depends on how rich the artist that wrote the original tune is.. at the moment there's a maria carey cover in the belgian charts, but i don't think maria minds as she's got plenty of money already. M.I.K.E is in a totally different situation.. scooter took the melody from strange world and earned much more money with it than mike ever received.. that's why mike said "oh no you don't!"

dunno how the mike story unfolded in the end, but i know he wasn't happy with it at all..

i think i agree with skip2 on this one. i am almost positive that, in USA, if an artist directly samples a track then they need permission. however, if they make a tune that sounds like another tune, with same melody and everything, i dont believe they need permission. who's to say that they even heard the original tune before making their own anyway? case in point: look at M.I.K.E. and L-Vee. both made tunes that are almost identical and were released, i believe, pretty cloesly with one another.

so it *is* possible for two people to make the same song without knowing about it. it's also happened in hip hop alot. one particualr case involved Jadakiss and Cormega. both albums came out in the same month and 1 track on each of the albums contained the same exact beat. however, one was produced by cormega and the other.. well i'm not sure. but i think you get my point.

in the case of scooter, it's OBVIOUS that its a blatant ripoff only because, unless it is the largest coincidence in the world, there is no way they can make that many tunes that sound like other tunes.
