Hey tatgirl.....

I was actually planning on going (alone, not really by choice) to PvD on the 11th....but if you're planning to catch Gielen on the 25th, I wouldnt mind going to that instead!

I wouldnt blame the immigrants for moving to the major rural areas of Canada, why do most people live there in the first place?

better weather (somewhat)
way more opportunities
all known major corporations have offices there....
others of the same ethnic background so they dont feel alone/deserted in an unknown place..
most opportunities for career advancement

basically I think it comes doewn to the fact the gov't needs to make these areas more attravtice for newcomers and citizens. Only then they will get the influx they are looking for out west and in the Maritimes.....otherwise it will most likely stay the same

it has partly to do with the industrial revolution. When the first immigrants came to Canada (mostly from Western Europe) they didn't own land so the only places they could work was in urban centers that possessed large factories where they could find employment.

Obviously though things aren't the same today.

Well this is relative. Vancouver gets better weather than TO i would say, but TO over maybe Halifax .. :P

quote:

What kind of opportunities are you talking about? If you mean like Tim Hortons and Esso gas station then sure yeah. But if you're talking about highly skilled work this is not necessarily true. It's surprising how much R&D is being done outside of major urban centers these days. Remember the cost to operate a business in say Calgary is probably far less than it is in downtown Toronto. And what about oursourcing of work like data entry to Ghana and software development to China and India?

quote:

others of the same ethnic background so they dont feel alone/deserted in an unknown place..

YEah that's true, there's definately a comfort level question here. But at the same time if they don't move out to other areas then how do they expect to ever establish their own community outside of the major urban centers?

It's interesting you brought this up though because I remember that huge ass census report study taken back in 2002 that showed the immigration influx into Toronto over the last 30 years. MTL was traditionally the immigration capital before TO. And we have to remember that there must have been some immigrants at the time who decided to take the plunge and make TO as cosmopolitan as it is now. Some other examples of spreading immigration include (but not limited too) a large Indian Sikh community in Surrey, BC.. Filipino community in Winnipeg, MB and of course Asian community in Vancouver.

Other areas are starting to see a slow but steady influx but not to the point at which we can safely say that they are major hubs for immigration.

quote:

most opportunities for career advancement

Again, this is all relative to what a person is looking for in terms of career advancement. But if immigrants with similar skills all continue to move into the same places, it's going to saturate the job market.

quote:

How should they do this ?

anyways, joke aside >first of all to get back to the original part of the discussion, canada has a huge backlog in asylum applications under the old law as the new law (since june 2002) is not applicable retroactively ...meaning lots of people are trickling through the system and often unjustifiably deported without a chance to appeal -as that mechanism of our 'effective' immigration system has also been removed by the honourable coderre!!!) ;
secondly, they did not make their set quota of accepting new immigrants this year (hence this whole argument);
and, thirdly, the CIC and IRB are fully aware that new immigrants are clustering in the urban areas, so they are trying to accept ppl more in the blue collar range in order to move them out to the less populated rural areas. *anyone up for living with mennonites and hutterites in the mid-ieval ages! hehehe!!
on the other hand when talking in respect to accepting skilled workers etc. they are not given the chance of applying their professions, PhD's and what not's as Canada will not recognize other professions unless u re-educate, which again costs money and time -and the rest of the consequences you can think yourselves ... probs over probs agh!! ...
and on top of that -as we talked about earlier -those lazy mofo's ur talking about who sit on their asses all day and do nothing (sounds like TA's to me!! ahahaha!) ehhummm...well, what would you do if the guvernment offered you loads of cash to sit on your ass and you're better paid than scrubbing a toilet at min. wage?

it's all a matter of the system!!! it sux! end of story! ... that's my job to try and fix it ...so shut up and dance!
see you all next w-e!!

i hate when people start threads like this. 90% of the people that start shit like this havent even wondered outside their back yards yet alone been to a diffrent country. for every Canadian that wants to sit there and talk about how bad America is.....you dont have a fucking clue how simular our countries are alike. Abbas....just cause you had a couple bad experiences in VA doesnt mean its like that everywhere. Iv been all over the states and been to Toronoto plenty of times and i have to say man......TO isnt Gods gift to North America If you wanna bitch about how fucked up a country is, try spending three months in Saudi Arabia where they cut your body parts off in front of hundreds of people for shoplifting. not that it happend to me but ive been there.

I spent 10 years in Kuwait, and lived there during the Gulf War, you are just using extreme cases, I witnessed an execution of 3 Iraqi soldiers (during the war) because they raped some women....

I lived there, all my friends lived there, and their families lived there (whether it was Kuwait, Saudi, UAE, Qatar, etc...) and we all got out with all out body parts! and last I heard that only happened in Iran anyway

and what you dont see is a 5 year old shooting someone, or a 14 year old going into a school cafeteria and taking out a gun and killing his fellow students, or someone robbing a bank, and so on...now dont get me wrong, im not saying it a perfect system, because no such thing exists

and im not saying TO is Gods gift to N.A., I personally like Vancouver and Montreal more, I was just saying I miss home sweet home thats all

yes I think Canada kicks ass, and it is better than the US in many ways than one (but thats just my opinion!)
