Ok I need your help on this big time... simple question tho. Do any of the following have resonant structures?:

PO3 3-
PO4 3-
BrO2 -
BrO3 -

I drew the structures for each and none turned out to be resonant, but the question asks "draw all resonant structures for those that apply". So I'm thinking at least one of them should have been.

I'm not sure on how to draw them. If I drew them right, the resonant structures (whether or not they existed) would be obvious. Here's what I got for my drawings (they're probably wrong):

1. BrO2 is not going to look that way.

try:

code:
_ _ _ O = Br = O - - -

with both O's having only 8 valence electrons and the Br having a ton

and the BrO3 appears to me as if it has resonance structures.. look at where your TWO double bonds are in relation to the free pair of e-.

good nite

ps.: also the BrO2 might have resonance structures..

Hmm, k BrO2- is a biatch...

but one thing for sure it doesn't have two double bonds...:/

I am thinking more along the lines of Bromine attached to one oxygen and that oxygen attached to an oxygen with resonance strucures...hmmm actuallyscrew the resonance structures...i dunno, but Br-O-O would give you a -ve sign.

Once again I'm not positive but it looks to me like you could draw that PO4 molecule in 4 different ways and BrO3 in 3 different ways. Does that have to do with anything?

Well that's what a resonant structure is: basically the same molecule drawn different ways. Hard to explain, but there are also some rules to it, according to this site: http://web.chem.ucla.edu/~harding/t...aw_res_str.html
