Well see, the brilliance of it was not necessarily achieved by the same old predictable horror plot.

YOu got Stanley Kubrik, a genius behind the lens, who doesnt stop till he gets the shot he wants. Kubrik was notorius for doing scenes over and over again for complete perfection. On top of that he wanted actual locations so the Overlook hotel was basically a real hotel somewhere (im not exactly sure where exactly). This in itself helped create the isolated feeling that movie depicts.

Aside from the cinematography lesson here, the movie is just stunningly incredible at playing with our imagination. I think thats what makes it, at some times, incredibly frightening.

Then of course theres those quick jump shot scenes with the two-girls that Danny meets. I know that scared me the first time i saw it.

Well, look im not trying to educate you in to being scared of this movie. Im just providing insight on to why so many other people think its a scary movie. If this movie didnt scare you when you were six then you got nerves of steel.

Its hard to class a movie as scary , I think scary is the wrong word to use, i could see a black widow spider and i would be scared, or i could be chased through an unknown forest being chased by loads of witches while my best friends guts are outside a tent, yes i think the blair witch project was a scary flick, due to its normaility and low buget also based on the truth,

Funnily enough, i always thought that was the cheesiest part of the whole thing.

No i dont, im scared of spiders
I was 8 or 9 when i first saw it not 6. I saw it again at about 11 but only payed attention to bits and pieces then saw it again about a year ago. It was a fucked up film but still i dont think it was scarey.
I went through a stage for like a year when i was about 13 where i watched those types of movies all the time like dracula, the texas chainsaw massacre etc but i stopped for some reason. I suppose they just bored me after a while, i never watch them any more. The most recent that i can remember is the blair witch project, i saw that twice on tv. Didnt think much of it really.

Its all well and good a movie building suspence and making you jump, thats just adrenalin.

I think movies that psycologically play with your mind and are basically twisted rather than jumpy are much scarier.

Event Horizon was freaky
IT as a kid scared the shite out of me
The Shining and Psycho are classics of their time and beautiful peices of cinematography.
Clockwork Orange and Exorcist i can understand why they were so revered in their time, but now not so far from the norm.

But i have yet to find a scary movie that really effects me, all suggestions welcome

Edit: Actually American Psycho now i come to think of it that guy's fuct up

japanese not chinese

There is only 1 movie which scared the fuck out of me in the last few years and that was "KAIRO" aka "PULSE"! It is also a japanese horror / psycho-thriller as Ringu but with a much more depressing atmosphere.

I just got my korean special edition of Ju On - The Grudge on DVD. A movie made by the guys who did Ringu and Kairo. Maybe I'll watch it tonight.

Other recommendation for damn scary movies are:
Dark Water (from the director of the original Ringu)
The Eye (korean horrormovie from the pang-brothers)
Maybe the sequels and the prequel of Ringu

Read more about the best asian horromovie here http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/kairo_pulse.htm
