another link on the topic;
http://cphpost.sites.itera.dk/default.asp?id=34392

seems like St. Andrew is right though; I check interpol for myself:
http://www.interpol.int/Public/Stat...ownloadList.asp

Sweden shares around 1.97-1.87 (2000,2001) "crime per volume" for 100,000 ppl. Compared this with the USA which is around 5.6 (2001)

I guess another urban myth - the news source above seems to state why this was however, as 900 ppl commit suicide supposedly (haven't verified this) each year in Sweden... damn, if Sweden is such a good place to live, why are so many ppl killing themselves each year? What they can't stand the cold... why don't they go stay warm then with your beautiful blondes?

My theory is that lack of sunlight (due to Sweeden's closeness to the Arctic circle) contributes to a greater number of suicides by people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, and those that don't have this disorder but exhibit symptoms. They are driven to contemplate suicide by other factors in their lives, and the lack of sunlight exacerbates this. Personally my mood is usually much worse in the winter months, and I've seen this exhibited in others as well. If you look at Seattle and some other Northern cities on the North American continent you will see a similarly increased rate of suicide.

-just a theory of mine

It is a proven fact however that sunlight helps depresssion.

I have done some research about the suicides in Sweden now.

In the 50's suicides where extremely common in Sweden, even though this was maybe the best years in modern Swedish history in views of economic development etc.

Nowadays Sweden is one of few countries with a decreasing suicide degree. According to WHO Sweden is on the 17 (women) and the 22 (men) place in the list of total suicides in Europe (total 34 countries). So there is a lot of countries that is worth than Sweden. Sweden isn't really good at this, nor is it bad.

BUT now comes the scary part, 1996, there where 1250 suicides in Sweden! that's a lot more than the 700 the article is taking about. So i don't understand where they got their figures from. Anyway this is the same in other countries so it's not a special problem for Sweden.

Conclusion: That article sux!

BTW, got my figures from the Swedish health department...

The "swedish suicide problem' is def popular, but ive heard conflicting accounts as well. like St Andrew said, i think it WAS a problem, and everyone still assumes that it still happens that way.

again, its hard to check facts, but for as well as everyone has it in Sweden - for the most part - there sure are a lot of angsty youths...

btw i think Vesa has a valid point too.

it just seems that when Scandinavians are in High School(gymnasiet) they are seemingly convinced they have the worst live ever - dunno why, its probablly the sunlight. but when you take a Scandinavian adult out of Scandinavia they seem to appreciate the homeland more! or so it seems|

yeah this article really does suck. Very pourly written indeed. It does give no sources on the stastical data and it seemed like a 12 year old wrote it.

If you're refering to the article I posted, it stated 900 - I don't know either where they got these figures; perhaps they are the msot recent (2002 or 2001 or 2000) or perhaps a 5 year average (to make it look higher).

Of course it does, its Scandinavian
