Some of Airwave's stuff does straddle the line between trance and progressive trance, but I think he tends towards the former. He's one of the few artists that I feel makes plain old "trance" these days, without any of the fancy adjectives. We're just used to thinking that this is "progressive" because there's such a gap between actual progressive trance and uplifting/epic.

Basically:

Prog Trance (Holden, Breeder, Way Out West) <--> Trance (Airwave, MIKE) <--> Uplifting Trance (Armin, Ferry, all the rest)

Hope that made some sense. At least that's how I think about it.

Lol, all the styles can have all the rest in them (for obvious reasons). But the guys you've picked I agree with. Airwave's phrases are 32 beat phrases, so it's trance

Naturally there's a bunch of crossover, but that's just sort of the general spectrum I have in my mind.

I like how you're trying to distinguish by actual technical elements. Maybe we can deconstruct a bit of what makes these different labels tick.

(My opinion)

Progressive trance:

Solar Stone vs. Siroco - Destination
Solar stone - Solar Coaster

Most of the guys off of the Lost Language label.

Progressive trance in my opinion, takes one music element (which could mean a slow building riff, synthline...etc), and builds upon it, takes it out to tease you, the comes back with the same element with more added and eventually progressing into "something" full blown. It doesnt have much of a climax as normal trance have, and it might not be energetic enough for the E-tards.

I love progressive.

da hell, digweed still plays progressive trance. I mean he always has age of love - age of love in his box and plays it out. That's trance, last time I checked. I saw him last year in nov and he played trance with prog house, prog, breaks, ambient, tech house and techno.

I haven't heard Destination, but Solar Coaster is not even close to being progressive trance

Progressive trance, first off, is a lot slower than regular trance and it's bassline is more "detailed" and house-influenced, but still keeps some of the trance elements, such as an epic building synth line (if thats a good way to say it). Also, one thing that I noticed about "prog" is that it's a little more subtle/minimal than trance is. Whereas in uplifting trance, the melody is pretty much thrown out at you, in prog its toned down a bit.

In some songs though, it's really hard to distingiush whether they're prog house or prog trance.

I would consider all the Planispere tracks to be progressive trance.

Evan Almae made a great suggestion, Leama and Moor.

Bart Van Wissen - Space Tourist is another progessive traner
