You don't have to speak japanese.. of course, if you do, you could probably get around better in the beginning.
However, pretty much all request that you have this English teacher's diploma (forgot what it's called).. Japan is the biggest market right now, but you can pick wherever you would want to go (for example, go to a country whose language you want to learn while making money by teaching english there). Oh, and in most places you sign a 6-month contract, some 1 year (yes, Japan is one of those), and you can renew it if they offer you to stay/you like it. Some places you can do a 3-month summer program. It's very interesting. I'm thinking of doing this when I graduate from univ. next summer..
It might be somewhat problematic if English is not your first language, I heard..
