if u dont like it, then why do u bother listening...? |
I, as many others on this board do, enjoy listening to a quality broadcast from a large festival. I go in with an open mind, hoping to hear a solid blend of new records, solid mixing, and good atmospheres.
Tiesto's set to me, tonight, however, was laughable. To say I was disappointed would be a gross understatement.

I don't understand that. If someone trainwrecks through a whole set, and someone molds them into a wonderful flow, they obviously mixed them better. |
No, that's a matter of technique, not of artistic value. It measures in in the long run but there's much more to it.

And yes, I know all the Tiesto followers think that his mixing is more than beatmatching, cueing, and, well, what 99% of the DJs in the world do. It's some uber-intelligent harmonic and melodic balance that no other DJ can create except your "master".
Bollocks. It sounds like garbage. Maybe to the newbie fans they love it because Tiesto is the daddy of all EDM, but I mean seriously get off your horse and listen to it from an objective point of view. |
It sounds like garbage but it isn't. It's impossible to listen to music from an 'objective point of view'. This is an art, people value and appreciate it from different starting points in musical education, different perspectives in a cultural and social sense. You can only listen from an individual point of subjectivity and thank God for that. Tiesto has been my number 1 after 6 years of going to live events with pretty much all of the djs in the top100 and all of the trance djs in countless ocassions. My tastes have remained static even if I have widened my horizons with other genres. No one does it better for me and I have many reasons based on my background as a classical musician to come up to this point. That's it, sue me.

I suppose I can't criticize you for your tastes. I guess it's like me trying to convince a die-hard uplifting trance fanatic how great progressive house can be.
I suppose we will agree to disagree - on the set structure.
The mixing tonight, however, was a disgrace, which is why I posted this thread. For someone who is touted as "#1" it was an extreme letdown.

I don't understand why people keep bashing Tiesto for his mixing. Being the number 1 DJ is not at all about technical skills, the DJ Top 100 is a popularity contest, it's all about who THE PEOPLE like most. He's like a pop star, the face of the trance culture or whatever you wanna call it. So take it easy on him, being the number 1 is about image in front of the people, attitude toward the people, interaction with the people. And I think Tiesto's sets are very emotional and he interacts well with the crowd, that's why people like him. DJing is an art, not engineering. Sorry to disappoint those who think that if they can mix better than Tiesto then they should be ranked higher in the Top 100.

Ok, I take that back..maybe not better, but in a way that I would find more suitable for my type of set.
And yeah I think we should just let up on bashing Tiesto...seems like he's getting alot more hate cuz he's #1 than anything else. Im sure you guys wouldn't comment on whoever was #49 this year.

Well put. Although surely you'd expect someone labelled "the world's number 1 DJ" to encompass all skills, both technically and otherwise?
