I always wondered if, shall we say, Britney Spears was really that athletic that she could flail like a freak and not lose any breath whilst singing!

singers that dance on stage and sing can do so because they train for it by running on a treadmill and talking without stumbling. it was on tv.

Singers in the studio make heavy use of a machine called "auto-tune" .. basically they sing, and the computer adjusts their notes to be precisely in tune.

You'd be surprised at how many famous "talented" pop star singers are really poor singers....

Then again also.. it's not like andain, jan, etc. do alot of live singing.. so their experience with live audience is mediocre. But of course... yes they do sound nice when its not live. I'm not saying they don't sing live as often.. but not as much as all these popstars that sing worldwide in tours. And yeah some do lip sync.

But i do wonder how ayumi hamasaki sounds live. haha. And no i'm not putting her down because i am an ayu fan. But not as hardcore like a jpop fan.

Ah yes...vocoder auto-correct. You can download that for cubase -- however, you can always tell when they use it because of the oscillator synthesis used in it. It makes it sound slightly vocoded. However, you can mask this by filters and such...

Aside from that, you don't need perfect pitch to sing, relative pitch works as well. You do need practice, though. >_> (you only need perfect pitch to sing perfectly in key without anystruments)

can't say i've heard it. but listening to other livesets (eg johnston in the tiesto dutch dimension set) in which artists sing along, well, simply speaking: ouch. i have perfect pitch - which for you non-musicians out there means that i can tell if a note's in tune or not verrrrrrrry accurately; i can tell note names by listening to them; what a note (eg. A, f#, etc) should sound like ie pluck them out of thin air without bearings. so listening to someone who's ALMOST in tune is worse than torture to me. imprecision for me in music (esp singing) ruins the night. when musicians - vocalists especially are out of tune it actually PHYSICALLY hurts me and i wince.

there should be no excuse on the artist's part - audience pressure - as if the record he/she recorded wasn't going to be played to that many people anyway. not having perfect pitch?? pah! what's wrong with taking along a tuner!!! or listening to the song before? or the intro??? and then getting your bearings.

but sometimes to the artist's credit, recordings ARE pitchbent a little (small amts 1/4 semitone or less) - however, having been a music professional for so long he/she should be able to hear the difference and tune to that. almost same deal as singing A=440/442hz.

sometimes the voice is recorded and then pitch bent to fit the song (eg diff key, etc), or recorded with the singer being aided by a track in her earpiece (professionally anyway). maybe with all the mollycoddling some of these 'musicians' have lost the music bit?

that's my whinge for today. personally i think it's better for everybody (well us musically inclined, me in particular:P) if they lipsync.

I've seen quite a few live performances [video footage] of her, and it appears she has her good days and her bad days.
She's alright when she sings ballads but not so good when she's dancing around or singing her rock-influenced songs which require her to sing high and fast.

There was this one video clip where she was performing in front of thousands of fans @ some festival, and she caught a cold that day... she was coughing every 10 seconds or so, and could'nt reach certain pitches/keys. Painful to the ears and eyes.
