All this about techno being harder than trance is bull shit as well, some people need to listen to stuff by the likes of ricardo villalobos and co. to find out techno isn't all about hair raising beats.

Aamazing replies everyone thanx tons, I think i had the right idea to begin with... you can just sorta tell when stuff is one or the other, but its hard with some songs, in my mind at least. There probably isn't one true way to break it down, you can look at history of it, the technical aspect of it with bpm's and such or just the way it makes you move none are really right or wrong just the way different people look at it. Honestly the reason I'm interested in the whole difference between the two is becuase i just noticed how some people view the whole scene as one kinda of music as compared to other people who are sooooooo pure with the type they listen too, personally I'd love to progress my Dj'ing and thats why i'm interested for the future of things. Wondering if I mix different types into my sets if i'm gonna get boo'd or if it will be welcome. To me it doesn't matter what it is as long as it makes me (and the people listening) move.

Maybe I can help you... Techno is a genre that came around after the time of disco when people still wanted a dance type thing in clubs, but were sick of disco. Three black guys known as the holy trinity created this genre known as techno. Long story short, trance grew out of that in time. One of the members of the holy trinity and I believe the leader of it was named Derrick May, so if you want to hear a techno track, ur best goin with him, and then of course if you want a trance track, go with paul van dyk, armin van buuren, or watever, the list goes on and on.

No it’s more like someone trying to tell the difference between say, Classical and Nationalistic or Drum & Bass and Jungle, when they are completely clueless. To the “untrained” ear they both sound the same. Besides, Baguette is a bad example as that can be slotted into trance sets quite easily. Something like Jeff Mills - The Bells would probably have been a better example.

What about "U96 - Das Boot"? is that 1/2 trance and 1/2 techno?
