well
my opinion on some clubs not lasting....
If you're going to do the same thing as another club, have the same dj's as another, and open up at the same time as another club...you might have problems. The club scene is ruthless, and if you're openning up a new venue, you need hype and a lot of it. Hype does not mean putting up flyers everywhere, that's a given..but more about getting people to talk about a certain venue within a community, and that's where promoters come in. Not everyone can be a promoter, some clubs take that for granted.
Most clubbers will attend an openning to see if it lives up to it's expectation, but you need to intice them to come back. Booking international guest isn't always going to bring people out, majority of attendee's don't care who's playing as long as the music is good, but more importantly the ambiance (everything from the friendly staff to drink prices) the club should have.
I am not referencing any clubs with my opinion

I love this thread... Reading what people have to say about the current club seen makes me feel so much better... The truth is that it has been in a very bad way since 1999... Club/Music seen has been going downhill in Toronto in my opinion due to what I would call American media influence... The Record labels push music in Canada that is a direct reflection of what’s happening in the states. Radio/TV seems to pick up on anything that is Urban (Hip Hop, Reggae & RB)... They are pounding this into the new club culture... It shows in what the Radio is playing and in turn what people want to hear in Clubs. Example flow and Z103... Its all euro from 1994 or Sean Paul.. IM SOOOOO TIRED OF Sean Paul!!! The truth is that clubs to stay busy are trying to play to the masses since the Underground seen cant seem to support them. This is why it’s so important to support venues like Guv, BOA, Pulse, Viva, System and any promoter/DJ who plays this style... Venues are expensive as are music production costs... If you don’t go to a club or periodically buy some music... why should anybody build a venue or make a record. Bottom-line somebody has to make some money to pay the bills. Lotus is a good example... My self and Mike Sharp opened the Club on Saturdays with Mark and Peter Ivals on Friday. Initially the Saturdays where very busy with a primarily house / Proggy mix... Nothing to heavy but still no Urban on the main floor... Fridays were also very busy but without consistent styles of international DJ's coming in Mark never really had a chance to establish a crowd... One week it was James Lavelle and the next it was Digweed. The main room was not really proper for Big Room Sound but worked really well with a house / tribal style and buy the way the sound was solid (EAW Sound)... unfortunately the AC problem was deadly and an immediate. Currently Lotus is open doing Urban and have fixed there problems and changed the Top floor to suite a Big Room sound. I’m hoping to see them start something a little different... well see... We need to get people to open up there minds to other styles of music and bring it to a larger audience... In essence lets not keep it a secret or there will be only a few left listening to very little music in really small and few clubs... This is not Europe... In the meantime support what we have and who we have or it will easily go away.
Sorry for being so long winded but it hits home

So true...
We need more people on board... Look at the urban clubs... People are being led by the nose and for what, the music... They all play exactly the same stuff in every club...

Its not just new nightclubs that can't survive, its new businesses. According to the latest statistics, 80% close their doors within 1 year. And from the remaining 20%, 80% go bust in the next 4 years. So that means less than 1 in 20 make it through the first 5 years. Why? Because of the infamous Entrepreneurial Myth - the false idea that if you're good at making product or providing a service, you're automatically qualified to sell it. In order words, most new business owners simply have no idea what the hell they're doing.
