theyre two batteries. the top one does the old models, and the second one does the new models. they are replaceable, as apple have a scheme which costs u $99 for them to replace ur battery, or u can do it urself at the cost of the battery, im sure this would void the warrenty tho. the apple battery isnt shit, its just the technology it uses, heres some bumf for people who wana read it:

Q: Is the iPod's battery user-replaceable?

A1: Yes and no. The iPod's case is not designed to be opened, so, in that respect, it's not what would generally be referred to as "user-replaceable". But, the case can be opened, and there are several third parties that offer replacement batteries for the iPod, such as iPodBattery.com (instructions, with pictures: original, non-"dockable" iPod, new, slim "dockable" iPod) and PDASmart, for as low as $49. Some will even do the replacement for you if you send it in.

Q: I heard that the iPod's battery only lasts 18 months, and then you have to buy a new iPod! Is that true?

A1: NO! The vast, vast majority of even the earliest iPods, now over two years old, continue to function just fine. Some iPods, however, have had issues with batteries. Lithium ion batteries are only good for 300 to 500 charge/discharge cycles (more). For this reason, certain customers' usage patterns may cause the batteries to degrade, or fail, sooner than others.

A2: If the battery does fail, and the iPod is no longer under its original one year warranty or $59 AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, or any of numerous third party service plans, you don't have to buy a new iPod. You may replace the battery yourself for as little as $49, or have Apple perform the replacement for $99.

Q: Will the iPod's battery degrade over time?

A: Yes. Over time, the battery will not hold the same amount of charge as when it was new. This is natural, and is true of all lithium ion batteries. This slow degradation will not affect, or be noticed by, most users. However, based on usage, environmental factors, and many other variables, some heavy users may notice a greater degradation than others. It is important to understand that this is the exact same degradation that would occur with any lithium ion battery used in any laptop, cell phone, portable music player, etc., and is not unique to the iPod.

Q: Why didn't Apple use better batteries?

A: Apple uses the best lithium ion battery technology available from leading battery manufacturers. This is the best, most cost effective battery technology available given the requirements of the device. The lithium ion batteries that Apple uses are no different than the lithium ion batteries used by any other manufacturer, on products from portable music players, to laptops, to wireless phones. The battery should last most normal users the life of the product (several years).

Q: Is there any way to use an external battery pack, or standard AA batteries?

A: Yes. Belkin makes an external battery pack for the "dockable" iPod that takes 4 standard AA batteries.

Sony are well pissed off at the moment with the whole mp3 generation. Stupidly they thought they could wing what they thought was gonna be a small tech fad by adapting their ATRAC/Minidisc format to the memory stick.

They were having a lovely time with the Vaio and some of the Sony cameras doing well based on their Memory Stick technologies that their original mp3 portables converted mp3 to ATRAC before being uploaded to the stick.

This took fkin ages as it was also on USB1 and when apple unveiled the Gen2 iPod they shit their pants coz the fad didn't pass and they were left high and dry with an unefficient format and no ready-to-tool products with which to grab any market share at all.

indeed, Sony have a "MP3" player, but i think you have to convert to ATrac 3 first. Also it 300 pounds and only stores 128MB of songs! WTF you can get an iPod for that and have 20gb of tunes! Atrac3 is an arse really. If these new Hi-MD players could play MP3's Sony would grab a bit of the market, but no, they are still trying to champion a lost cause

I love the idea of smaller MP3 players. 128mb ones are a bunch of arse and i dont have 20GB of MP3's.

Creative had a 1.5GB one called MuVoX2 or something that looked pretty spunky but this new iPOD might actually make me cum. Out in April too. Might have to get a PC with USB2 and something better than Windows 98 mind you.

PUBLICATION: Mixmag
PUBLICATION DESCRIPTION: UK's largest dance music consumer mag

JOURNALIST: Simon Munk (freelancer)
DEADLINE: 15-January-2004 at 14:00

QUERY:
iPod Mania

I'm writing a feature for Mixmag on the rise of the iPod (and MP3 jukeboxes in general) - the culture, how they'll revolutionise dance music, distribution of music, fashion etc.

1. I'm looking for experts to quote on the impact of iPod from the following areas: music industry (what the iPod will mean for distribution of music, new artists etc.), fashion (specifically anyone making clothes adapted to carry iPods), consumer technology (specifically anyone who can comment on the future of jukeboxes/personal music etc.), youth culture etc.

2. I'm looking for iPod related products - accessories for the iPod itself, rivals to the iPod, iPod DJing kit and even the next wave of smart jukebox devices.

Thanks in advance,

Si Munk
