Way, I just bought a server from www.ev1servers.net. Its $129 per month Windows std server with 60GB HD and 700GB transfers per month.
This is how I propose we run the operation:
Each shareholder will be allocated HD + BW proportional to how much they want to spend. $20/month will buy around 2GB HDD space and 30GB of BW. Exact ratios to be worked out. Payment will be through Vinyl Warning by Bank Transfer and we can provide an invoice if you wish to claim it as a business expense. Each shareholder will have their own website / domain with their own ftp login to upload files.
There will be a master domain which all shareholders will have admin access to. This master domain won't hold any mp3's just all the html, database and php for posting the livesets.
I propose to do this not for profit however only in the sense that it pays for the time I spend setting it up and providing support. If you can't handle that then stiff I wont have any time to look after any of the html / phpnuke stuff so someone will have to sort that out.
The server will be strictly livesets only. Anyone caught uploading full length singles will burn in hell.
i think way too many people have too many different ideas of what this thing is going to be.

May I ask what you pay for your own hosting? Please include specs.
Umm, I might just add that the server is actually $129 US DOLLARS per month. And the $20 per share was in AUS DOLLARS. Also BW would probably be more like 60GB per $20 share, not 30GB I must have calculated incorrectly.
im on the 24month plan.. $6.95US (~$9AUS) per month including free domain
800mb storage 40gb p/m transfer

hehe, seems everyone wants in on the action!
whiterabbit.trancetribe.com is up and running... but I think it won't really serve the same purpose that you guys want.
whiterabbit is only going to be for pro and amatuer DJ's to showcase their live sets or promo sets, or promo unreleased tracks.
Each Dj who has a profile on the web site, also gets a login to whiterabbit, where they can upload their sets.
Anyone who is interested in being an amatuer DJ and having a profile on the site, let me know and I will set it up. I'll need a pic and bio, then I can set up your login for whiterabbit.

Yes, so it appears that for roughly the same price you can get space on a dedicated server rather than on a (possibly overcrowded) shared webserver.
It comes down to the quality of service.
quality for me has been amazing, quite a few people on here can agree with that.
anyway im still in on the idea i just liked the way djway put it

Ok, been doing some talking, some leg work etc on this, and know why more people aren't doing this; it's no fesable in the longer term. This is due to licensing.
Fair enough a DJ says yep, record/boradcast my set, but he's not the one who's going to get slammed with the licencing costs if someone catches him. For a set to be hosted/broadcast/aired/played a fee has to be payed to the RIAA/PPCA(APRA). The way I wanted to run it was VERY AU based (IE AU domain/contacts). The Industry is already hunting for people to take down/force to pay for licencing, it wouldn't be long before I/we got caught.
I'm not willing to put myself in such an easy position to get caught.
Scotty: I'd seriously advise you tread carefully (IE make people login to download sets, and have a disclaimer or something) if you plan on keeping the sets up on whiterabbit.
I've been stung once by the Movie Industry in the last year, I'm not keen on getting done @ a HUGE cost by the Music Industry.
Thanks to all those who were keen on the idea!
