Well we are sliding back the subject lol.. I think there was a miscommunication with your friend and you about not using the pitch control. Unless he is doing the cheesy back cueing and then using the mic and then playing the other record after heheh j/k. But I think he's talking about pitch bending... or if not I have no clue how you can beat match any two without the pitch. It would be the worst mixing yet. I suggest you listen to him live and if you see him use the pitch control then we got a liar! lolol j/k

There was no miscommunication, he wasn't using the pitch control because he only attempts to beat-match 2 records with the same pitch (both CRW). He said he hasn't gotten to that level even though I thought the eccence of beat-matching was using the pitch control. whatever

Gemini XL500II, and I don't think he uses the pitch bend buttons either, he just moves it with his hands so that they are synced up.

That is the gayest thing to do.. well not talking about your friend but what he's doing.. ya know.. if he's just doing it with hands doesn't it make him get tired? lol

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but if you change the pitch of a song to match the beat and make it (say) faster, wouldn't it distort the track by making vocals sound like chipmunks? I thought there was a way to just change the tempo without changing pitch to avoid that distortion. That's what i do when i mix on the computer, can it not be done that way live?

Im not sure if dj mixers have built in tempo controls aswell as pitch
but mixing live, unless you have pitched the song way way up, you won't really turn the vocals into chipmunks

Well you can.. if you have samplers and effect switches you can pull it off. But regular nope. Cuz I remember on ferry's set he played the new remix of trisco muzak it was fast. I bought the record it was slow like mofo and even I put it the highest on a 35 rpm it was still slow like delerium.

WTF? I hope that's a typo.

@kristine: The majority of the DJs will not adjust the "real" pitch, only the tempo which makes the pitch go up along with it. The equipment just isn't build for doing this (Talking about vinyl and a standard club mixer).
And have you ever tried playing a track with vocals at +10% (on your computer) and leaving the pitch where it originally was...sounds strange and awful to me, cause you can hear the compression that the computer does to keep the pitch the same. It's even worse in the other direction. If you have the possibility, play a track at -30% tempo and leave the pitch the same. The time-stretching will give you a nice little drum&bass effect, but I wouldn't want my records to sound like that.
