I got a kick in the ass when I first started and this really was helpful. As most people think their shit doesnt stink when they first start. I showed a DJ a track that I thought rocked (I listen to it now and cringe) I was put right back in my hole. This was a good thing (TM).. Only after a year I got the confidence to show this same DJ another track. He loved it. I had won the respect of this guy. It meant much more to me to know he was giving me a non biased opinion. I think those who hype everything up at the start are crushed at sometime. They then have two options- Give up or shutup and get back into your hole and produce for a few years

I have major respect for a producer (who lurks on this board).. I heard his stuff on mp3.com.au and loved it. He eventually won a producers comp in australia and got the oppertunity to do a live set at a huge rave (among say.. Above and Beyond!) After his set I came upto him and started worshiping him...
His only responce.. "I had no idea what I was doing up there!" We partied the night away and not once did he even mention himself or his set through out the night. A very modest producer indeed. Respect.

i don't want to brag, but i do find myself very gifted in music and i've been playing music all my life (classical violin, jazz soloing trombone, guitar)

I think this has helped given me an edge in producing... Although when I first started, I believed myself to be very talented and all that (i remember one time i would keep clicking on my own mp3 account in hopes of getting more hits lol)... However, the technical aspect is one thing I still need to perfect myself on...

Personally, I've never had this "killer tune" in my head... all my melodies just come very naturally and easily due to all that musical background.. it almost seems logical to me sometimes...

Also, a final word of advice... I personally tend to stay away from sites like mp3.com or soundclick or whatever, unless you truly have nowhere to host your tracks... You always tend to try to compare yourself with other producers on there and (not to say there aren't some really good talent in there) the majority aren't very good... Also, the stats tend to throw you off... (just because you have tons of listens doesn't mean you are good) and there are a lot of people who just look at your artist site, get your e-mail and e-mail you a bunch of stuff like asking you to send off demos or some professional cd design covers, etc....

My advice... be modest... let people hear your music... they can steal it and say they made it or do whatever they want with it... but one thing they can't take away is your passion and talent for producing music... I've already had several of my tracks being ripped off by one or more assholes (who i won't mention) but it really doesn't matter for me... They can say that the track is theirs... can even get a label to sign them with that track.. but one thing they can't do is take away my passion and talent for music producing... I personally don't know if right now my quality of my tracks are good enough to get signed... but i know one day, if i just keep at it... I don't want to sound cocky, but I do believe that I make good music and i have a very good musical ear and knowledge that will help me one day hopefully make a "killer" track... I'll (hopefully) get signed and make some extra dough to pay off that damn univesrity tuition!!
