As discussed on the weekend at your birthday party. The way the world works is this - everyone looks after their friends. This applies to everything. Even working in a job, people try to get their friends in before the job actually goes to the public. Friggen great stuff isnt it? All i can say is that i was like you for 6 months after my course and didnt get one interview in the network admin side that i was after.. Now im at a huge national insurance firm as you know doing their IT support.. and the most i have to complain about all day is how bored i get sometimes at work which i dont mean to sound arrogant or anything just that if you dont give up there will be something waiting for you.

Make sure your always whoring those job seeking web pages, go full on and mail your resume heaps.. one thing i would recommend is a job seeking agency, vilena went temping with those guys and never not had work for a full year then they landed her a full time job as you know a month or so back.. anyways man, you have the brains, you have the paper, its like you have the bait and the fishing line.. just dont get fed up waiting for those fish cause they will start biting, and when they do youll be the one in this seat offering your advice to the next guy whos down about this fucked up job seeking process.

I must say, I agree with webby

I was quite lucky in that I did one year of uni, wigged out, quit and became a chef for a couple of years. Whilst doing so, got to know the computer manager at a TAFE where I did a 6 month chef course.

After 2 years of being a chef, I was very sick of it. Crap pay, crap conditions, no holidays, and a completely crushed desire to cook anything

Luckily I got a call from the computer manager wanting to know if I wanted to be a Network Admin, which I took on the spot. Got outsourced to Unisys a year-and-a-bit later, and worked my way up to 3rd level tech support for NT/Novell/Unix/Lotus state wide.

Fun fun fun

Then I quit, came to sydney and became the firewall admin for a bank.

Throughout this whole time, I have been consistently paid more than my uni graduating friends.

But now I'm seeing that glass ceiling approaching ...

in IT at the actually-doing-real-IT-work level, there's no real need for a degree, experience wins out every time. But you can't do that forever ... well, you can, but who the hell would want to?

Sure, I'm getting paid quite a substantial amount now, but I want out of the industry.

So, in the next couple of years I'm going to head to uni and start into a psych-ish degree of some sort (an area that holds great interest for me, and having worked in a psych faculty at a uni fixing computers, I'm also quite aware of what it actually entails ... and the fact that I've got a HD in stats at uni before helps )

It's not so much that I want to work in the area specifically, more that having a degree of any sort will be valuable, and psych degrees are applicable to pretty much any job.

Yeah, I wish I'd finished my first attempt at a degree in some ways, but in no way do I regret the path I chose in its place. There was no way I was mature enough when I went to uni to put in the necessary work.

Did I even manage to find a point? Or was I just procrastinating before downing a server so I can leave work early....

oh, and Paulie: Chin up! You'll find a job, either through luck, nepotism or just plain hard work! And when you do ... god, you'll wish you were back at uni doing a second degree Good luck man!

Well i have a Ddiploma in IT and finished it last year....

i now do nothing by day except sleep and go to the beach... oh yeah and spin records (i do havea job, mainly night though)

im just doing casual work while i save for overseas....

no intentions to get a full time job or settle down, im 20 years old FFS maybe 23/24 years old, see how i go

Psych is the most interesting degree you can do at UNI. PERIOD!

I'm also doing the same course as Paulie and Jizza. Still have 4 subjects to go but I don't think i'm going to finish them any time soon.

I got a job three years ago working as a field services tech, got called back to do Comm Bank stuff around Vic. Started in an ok kind of job and got experience that has really paid off.

That experience landed me a short interview with a new company last November. Told the boss all that I knew, and he took me on for a few days.

Ended up doing a bit of work for them. And from what I heard from the directors that were over here working with me, not to sound arrogant or anything, they were impressed with my attitude. And that's probably been the main thing. Once u work with your boss or whoever for a while u should get to know them a bit better, and they'll enjoy working with u and want u in the office to work for them. But I know you have to "get ur foot in the door" so to speak.

Now I get 50+ hours of work per week. I've actually been put on more work by three different project directors than I can physically do. On average I go to 2-3 different places of work a day. And because of all the travel I have a Ford Focus or Lancer hire car with all fuel paid for parked in my drive way pretty much all the time. Despite all the stuff that can and sometimes does go wrong, I actually like my job.

But if there's anyone in Victoria who knows a Cisco router from a Cisco switch, knows what an NTU, OnRamp and a MAU are (and do), has a mind for problem solving patching problems, and doesn't mind getting their hands dirty (sometimes) then let me know.... cos there's only two of us in Vic and Tassie doing a shite load of work, and we wouldn't mind another person on the team. U also have to be willing to learn heaps, take some amount of pressure and being thrown in the deep end and be in it for the long run.

Look mate just stick at it... I know it's a bad feeling when u get rejection letters, but u have to keep trying. Even look at getting an IT support job for a while, that's a way of getting at least some part of your body in the door.

I just finished a law degree (as well as an arts degree) and I just got a job in IT too. Not gonna be permanent or anything but something I wanna do for now.

well i am in yr 12 now...16 going 17 this month...buying decks in 2 weeks...planning on doing law at uni

im about to embark on first year @ university of sydney...doing arts informatics....ummm im freaking out now coz of all ur posts....
im thinking about getting outer my course like right now....

advice plz =(?

I'm over uni...

I have 4 subjects left, but i've got myself a job, and now uni will get in the way.. so it's part time for me.

And if anyone's looking for a job, knows comms equipment like the back of their hand ( and some experince in a commercial comms environment), is good at debugging problems and wants some good solid weekend work till at least June then I may have a place for you...

Let me know if anyones interested.

I wouldn't think about dropping uni entirely, just because some people you don't really know on a message board aren't 100% positive about it. And besides, most of the posts here say that uni is much better for you in the long term. If you can handle a short term loss for a long term gain, then uni is for you.
