i think we need to find our own identity when it comes to EDM.. South America and Asia seem to hav theirs.. we need ours!

I totally agree. Even though alot of these parties have umpteen superstar djs, they only spin 1 or 2 hour sets. It's way better to 2 or 3 djs spin 3-5 hour sets as opposed to 10 djs spinning for an hour each. I went to Godskitchen and saw tons of djs, but at an hour and a half each, they weren't able to truly shine. THere was a definite lack of flow.

exactly. fuck trying to be like all the rest. be yourself.

i'm much more satisfied with the scene the way it is now, than say 4 years ago.

now i can count on guvernment, system & boa to give me at least 3 weekends to go out and hear EDM dj's.


before it was go to guv or system once every 2 months. and sit and wait what the next event would be.

as much as people would like to improve things... there's people above you that dont really give a shit so you could spend your life trying to bring in gatecrasher & cream to toronto and be unsuccessful...

so you might have better luck in mexico

Aussie's and Brit's party much harder than we do over here, so they also like their music much harder...

It would be hard to introduce hard house into Toronto since most people haven't heard it before, and I can tell you based on experience that most people in TO won't like it.

DJ's spin longer sets over here than back in the UK and alot of people prefer that. I also think most of the TO clubs do their own promoting which is different than other cities (although this might have changed over the last few years). When a club promotes for itself, it doesn't want another promoter coming in to do the show.

Also, like someone mentoned, if the place is already getting filled week in and out (ie Guv), there is no point economically in bringing in alot of top international talent.

Another big reason why you find crazy DJ line-ups in the UK for relatively small events: i.e. regular clubnight Crasher or Gods events has to do with the fees they actual pay DJs. It is a matter of fact that DJs get at least 70% less money in England than they do say in the US.

Why would a DJ play for so much less in the UK? Because if a DJ cracks the UK, the DJ makes it big time all over the world.

Another reason why the UK has crazy line-ups for their club nights is due to the fact that there is healthly competition between promoters, just like there is in Monreal. They book 3 djs in one night because if they don't club X down the road will. Toronto has one of the best clubs in the world, namely Guv. It's so good that there is no 'real' competition against it.

EDIT: Lets not forget that in the UK dance has crossed over into the mainstream. This means that there are tons of sponsorship dollars floating around that make many of the events financially feasable. Just about any large scale event such as the Molson Indy, sports events, etc. are only possible because of the sponsorship dollars.

^^^ what she said, it's all in the booking fee's and travel costs.

email the big name dj's you want to see and tell them to all play together for the same fee that one of them would charge and you'll see it happen.

This is only partially true. There are certain promoters in the US that can get top dj's for less than most other places.... Spundae for example.

still, you are talking flights for this big dj's, their demands as well, so it gets expensive very, very quickly. I've always viewed toronto as town where you bring in 1-2 big names not the huge choice and most deejays that are for these nights are uk residents and their travel is not expensive because they are held in the uk. I bet it will happen eventually even as ari said, the toronto scene is controlled by a few. I see a UK club doing something big as a one off event at some time. GC died, GK is busy expanding elsewhere, so who knows I've heard rumors of a breaks all start lineup but that's always rumored . I say if you like GK too much, move back to the UK, every scene is unique. I've always viewed Toronto as a bandwagon jumper city (I've lived here all of my almost 23 yrs), we like all forms of music. People go see Anne Savage and others if they come or they go see prog, trance or house deejays. I think all that Toronto cares about is big names.
