Kind of wish I could accidentally break my skis so I'd have an excuse to buy new ones. I feel like such a dinasour on my 205's, but they is still nice and fast.
snowboarding to me is like playing street hockey vs ice. Can be fun to muck around, but it's not the real thing and cannot be taken seriously.
The one thing that pisses me off about snowboarders is the idiots who think nothing of taking massive heelside turns that go the width of the trail. Sure it's your responsibility to pass people downhill safely, but for one person to take a whole trail, you deserve to get run over. |
It's funny that you should mention "accidentally" breaking skis. On the trip to fernie I took recently I broke my 185cm Rossignol Energy CUT skis by sliding off a ledge and crashing through some trees. (remarkably I came out without a scratch). I had to buy a pair of 191 cm X-Scream's to replace em (the length is kinda good, the 185's were probably a bit short for me anyway).
I have an awful history of breaking equipment - I used to have a pair of Head - Cyber skis with those rubber capped tips. The tips eventually fell off both skis just from the vibrations of moguls and jumps. Ive also managed to break 3 pairs of poles in the last couple years, even a pair of "unbendable" gipron poles (sux-those poles were awesome). I've even had a binding fall apart on me on some moguls.
205cm skis are pretty long skis by today's standards, but I don't think the sidecut and length are all that important if you've got skill to use them.
pyrobrad: I went to Panorama last year for reading week. Overall it's a pretty good resort - 4000ft of vertical which is considerably more than most hills. I'd say Panorama's snow isn't generally as good as places like Fernie and Kicking Horse - last year it was pretty bad but it was an off year. Another problem with Panorama is if you want to ski the Taynton bowl (off the backside), where all the good steep glade skiing is, you have to take all 3 lifts per run, plus there's a long assed ski out at the bottom. Still, the situation has improved from last year. It used to be you had to take 4 lifts to get to the top, including a double chair and 2 t-bars, now they've got a second high speed quad and a fixed speed quad instead of those last 3 lifts. One advantage of Panorama is the price - there's package ski/hotel deals with on hill accomodation that have simply amazing prices. I think when we went last year it was $250 Canadian per person for 5 days skiing passes + 5 nights hotel accomodation. (Hell, lift tickets alone at most places are gonna cost you $250 for 5 days)
