I think bug_bite's got a point though. The costs involved with events that big are huge. At the moment it's all still relatively new over in the US so the promoters are unable to guarantee people through the gates and secure funding and sponsors. Sponsors in particular are going to be concerned about the made media image of such gatherings.

I think it's gonna take a promoter who's going to have to take a risk and say fuck it, it's going ahead regardless, and sponsors who'll do the same (maybe record companies/clubs). Even if they don't break even, once it gets out the the party went ahead and that it was a blinder, people will be more willing to part with their money for the next one.

Yah, my friend lost 45K on a party last year because 24 hours before the doors were supposed to open he lost his venue (due to the local gov) and the new venue was not sufficient. Plus with all the publicity a lot of people that had bought tickets didn't come which meant their friends that were going to buy tickets at the door didn't come either. It's so sad because he could have just cancelled it...he knew he was going to loose money but he still put the show on. He weighed the good and bad and decided that the bad wasn't nearly as bad as not trying his hardest for everyone to still have a good time.

Before someone makes the next comment about how the media in the U.S. portrays trance and raves as a "drug-infested culture," I just want note how it portrays rap and hip-hop. Rap artists are always associated with crime, depression, not paying child support, "the streets." Ever watched a 20/20 report on some rap artist? They always emphasize how these "musicians" are gangstaz with hundreds of lawsuits and charges against them, and a general FEAR by the public of them. (Interestingly enough recently I turned on my TV and they were showing a rap video, where a guy "from the streets" -- um, let me clarify, American streets -- walks into a store, wants to buy something for his "broad", reaches for the money in his pocket, and some elderly white woman starts screaming, "He's got a gu-uu-u-un!") Same with hip-hop. When they do TV reports on hip-hop it's always some troubled pierced kids from dysfunctional families, "white trash," baggy pants, etc. And -- how can we forget? -- drugs and teen sex, which, as American schools have so firmly pounded on our heads, is the most evil, most abhorrent thing imaginable (As a sidenote, in the area where I live they started making kids sign "pledge cards" where they swear that they won't have sex before marriage. NO COMMENT.)

So when you say trance and raves always get a bad rep State-side, remember that rap and hip-hop, which you say are so popular, do too.

yeah, but rap/hip hop has a "bad" image, which easilly attracts young pplz, who want to turn their back on society, trance is not about that, trance is more about the good things, and u dont do good things when ur trying to be anti-good, saying fuck u all, i raped ur daughter and shes pregnant now, if u get my drift

Excellent point. Probably worth pointing out that dance music has a pretty bad rep everywhere else too. Say "trance" to sombody in the UK who's not into the scene and they think "drugs", so it's not just in the states.

But almost everyone here supports it. Can you imagine that? It's all the stupid, conservative, ridiculous puritan crap that applies to everything.. ..But whenever I start getting this bad picture of America, I always recall the film "American Beauty" and regain hope that there are still some normal people here.

we had the same here with gabber, which had a kinda dark side too, that was, i think, the main reason it got overmainstreamed here...

but trance hasnt got that dark side, so ppl might feel less attracked to it... after all, humans r originally bad...

In Israel trance is very mainstream (unfortunatly, because there's all this wannabe's)... every 7 year old listen to trance (cheezy, offcourse) and the radio stations play it every chance they get (the cheezy commercial trance offcourse).. i don't like it that situation.. there's waaaaay too much exposure, there are almost no famous DJ's in israel that spins non-commercial trance.

No DJS?? Infected Mushroom and Spacecat! That's not mainstream! I mean, it's not uplifting either but...! Well then again you said DJs and they PA but...still...!
