I agree with trance-nrg for the most part, but he's not really taking into account VSTs like Atmosphere and Trilogy which sample the quality hardware itself and add a lot of flexibility. Yes, they will never beat the real things and never offer the same flexibility, however 90% of the time you will not need the real synth when you have a product like that.

Hardware is better than any VST, but that doesn't mean you should run off and buy a ton of it. Amazing sounds are still achievable with software, just not as easily. That said though I'll probably be buying a Virus when I start working this summer, hehe.

actually if one knows about dsp (digital signal processing) he or she would realize that it means digitally processing a signal.. now if one also knows about computers then one might realize that whether you do the digital processing on a dedicated dsp chip or do the processing on your computer's cpu make's no difference as to the sound quality. another thing to think about is that vst's are designed to use only a fraction of your computer's processing power so you can run more than one instrument at a time. If a developer wanted to design a vst that would use a very large amount of processing power (while also being programmed well and efficiently) they could put more bells and whistles on it than you could shake a stickat, and make the sound so amazing that it would rival any "hardware" synth. As computers get faster i predict you will see both hardware and software audio improve greatly, because most hardware uses digital chips that benefit from the same technological advances that 'regular' computers benefit from.

Sounds very nice. Like the guy said, the melody itself is cheesy but I'm pretty sure you just threw it there quick to show the sound that you made...very beautiful. Reminds me of my Nova. I'll upload later a sample of a patch that I made with it last year using saw waveforms, two osc, a 12dB low filter, -25 and 25 of detune and unison of 2 with little bit of reverb and plenty of delay.

Starting with February (I think) issue, FM (future music) magazine has a series of write-ups on Hardware VS Software. The Moog software cam close but didn't win, but FM-7 (NI) did - even Brian Eno said that aside from maybe a few particluar quirks that the instrument has, he could not tell the difference between real yamaha and VSTi. VSTis have come a long way. With advance of controllers like MicroKorg and Novation 25 you'll soon see VSTis place HW out of business. That's why companies like Novation are getting into the sw market and getting out of the HW market. Hell, roland tried it with their VariOS (which many claim is a $1000 dongle). ONce manufacturers of soft vst'is will figure out to secure their products, it's buh-bye hardware. You'll probably see just hard-core companies stick around, like Access, Waldorf, Oberheim, Roland, and Korg, Clavia. The rest will go the way of dodo. Give it maybe 4-5 years (or less).


P.S. Virus already has a VSTi (well, TDM) - Virus TDM that sounds like the real thing but soft-based. Clavia has soft version of Nord, Novation has soft version of Bass Station, etc.
