Unfortunately I have to say - that based on my own buying habbits - there is nowhere in Toronto that sells good, upfront trance.

Although Release Records is probably the -best- store in Toronto (by far) I have no option but to buy 15 to 20 records / month from Europe - simply becuase nobody in TO stocks the tracks, gets them quick enough or gets enough of them so that they are available for me to buy locally.

Personally - I'd much rather give my money to a local record store than FedEx and some euro-record shop - but there is no alternative.

Give Paul a fucking break.

If you don't want him to suggest - just tell him to buzz off and he will. I'd rather have him handing me shit than being forced to waste 40 minutes at PDR only to find some scratched and ruined record.

Richard,

What would have to be done to have Release increase the availability of trance (not progressive trance) vinyl in the store?

As I said before - I'd love to give you guys my money (because you're gents and good people). Many of us who buy hundreds of trance records per year end up having to go overseas to get the tracks we want.

I'm talking about regular trance releases (not just the top 5 of the month) from lables like: Armind, ASOT, Black Hole, Bonzai, Captivating
Data, Energetic Records, ID&T, In Trance We Trust, Liquid, Lost Language, Magic Muzik, Platipus, Purple Eye, Yeti, etc. I know I've seen records from all of these lables in your store before.

There must not a market for true trance music in Toronto. Even though IMO this is a highly underserviced market in Toronto (and North America). It could just be very well a matter of volume/scale.

"Release wants to focus on the genres they currently cover" is a completely reasonable response. I know from my own business ventures that focusing on your target market is key - and perhaps trance proper isn't a space that makes sense for Release (based on the above mentioned factors).

Just curious though. Keep up the good work!

rabbitjoker,

release records is a specialty shop targeting the progressive genre. its been release's vision from day one. we have worked so hard to be where we are today and now when people think progressive they know that release records A. has the biggest selection in progressive, and B. we have the most upfront tunes/selection which our competitors just wont have.

as everyone knows we do carry other genres but our selection might not be as upfront as other record shops in the city which is fine because our main focus is progerssive and we know that when it comes to this style we are at the top!

who knows, maybe in the future our trance selection will grow like our progressive selection (assuming that there is a demand for it) but until then we will continue to do things the way we have been doing them...

richard

from a non-dj perspective:

I like going into release w/ matt. I wouldn't say it's never busy tho. It gets busy (esp on saturdays), but they just have a lot of tables so that's why it doesn't get busy. matt gets all his prog reccords here and is very loyal to the store.

I like 2thebeat. I had heard that they had a lot of techno reccords, but they didn't seem to have many records period. nice staff and very comfy.

the pit. found some good techno reccords. the guy that owned it, i didn't really have contact w/. he had a friend or another employee. who was the most annoying individual I have ever come across. loud, rude, obnoxious. i definately compromised my enjoyment of reccord shopping. matt and i got thru a massive pile in reccord time b/c we wanted to get out of that place.
