im pretty sure you only use the top box for displaying the bpm for a cued song. The bottom box displays the parameter for whatever effect you have chosen: milliseconds for echo and delay and percent for pitch and reverb. Read the manual closely if you can, it goes into more detail.
If you chose 2 to 20 or so milliseconds for echo, you will hear a pretty cool electro type sound. Though it's up to you to place it properly...

i own the kp2, and id agree with you 100%, very hard to use, especially in a live setting or recording. it all sounds kinda 'acidish' to me, not the best for trance or dnb, which is what i like most. but hey, if your crowd is high to kingdom come (sp?) off acid, then i'd guess it would work, but then again most anything would be good to a f-ed up audience.
