As it stands now with the present evidence (or lack thereof, rather), it's entirely possible.
But then again, when you're referring to the beginning of life or creation of the first life organism, you're not really referring to evolution. You are referring to abiogenesis, and presently there's a descent amount of research in this field. But it is far from conclusive on anything, hence the origin being entirely possible from a number of possible scenarios (including my personal god, the Great Cookie Monster from the planet "Zoinks!").
